Probably because she was taking her final revenge by getting snot all over my shirt. But I still smiled just to have her hugging me again.

“You’ve changed,” she said.

Beyond her, I could see Lynx brace, assuming I was going to be an asshole. He had no faith.

“I hope so,” I said as she snuffled into my shoulder. I patted her back. “Thank you.”

“We’ve got to get this to Honor,” Lynx said, holding up the missing Scourge stone.

“Well, we’re going to have to run,” I said. “It’s a lot of miles to cover, and none of us can shift now.”

“I’m faster,” Lucien promised us, holding his hand out.

Lynx’s gaze met mine. He had to know how much I hated this.

But I nodded anyway. “We’ll be right behind you.”

Lucien shifted into the wolf and took the Scourge stone in his mouth.

“The Scourge are all going to be drawn to that,” Lynx warned him. “Be fast, be careful. We’ll be on your heels with our swords if we can be but if you can outpace us… you’re on your own.”

The big wolf gave a nod of his shaggy head, then he was off.

CHAPTER40

Honor

As the housewas demolished around us, we all soared out as dragons. Zehr grabbed Caldren and disappeared into the shadows.

Then we all reunited on the other side, gaining temporary escape from the Scourge, but they turned and kept coming toward us. We could have run away from the Scourge and Kallus’s men, but battle cries lifted from the forest.

Caldren’s rebels raced out of the forest, and so did Jaik’s men. They joined the battle around us, fighting Scourge and Joachim’s men.

We would never leave them alone to die.

They strafed the Scourge with fire, but no matter how many Scourge burned up, there always seemed to be more.

Endless waves coming toward us, moving in a dark wave across the snow.

It was a bloodbath, but at least we were evenly matched. My arms ached as I fought first one Scourge, then another, then a grim-faced shifter I didn’t even know was a threat until he whirled and attacked me. It was chaos.

Then more soldiers swarmed out of the other side of the forest.

They kept coming and coming in waves as endless as the Scourge.

And beyond them… I glimpsed Kallus.

He raised his arm in greeting. His voice floated on the supernatural breeze to me, deep and resonant as if he were at my side instead of across a field. “We meet again, Honor. Ready to end this all?”

“What do you want, Kallus?”

If Branok just got me that last stone… I’d find another way to end it.

“Come be my queen. Rule beside me.”

“Go back to your own kingdom.”

He swept his arm, encompassing the chaos. “But yours is so beautiful.”
