Those blue eyes met mine angrily, icily. A muscle in his jaw ticked. The seconds dripped by as if he would refuse to answer.

“Because that was the first time I killed for you,” he said, sounding as if I had driven him to the edge of his patience.

He had killed for me. The thought staggered me.

When he didn't seem inclined to say anything else, I prompted, “Sounds like a good time for a bedtime story, Damyn. You're just going to leave it there?”

“I sure as hell I am,” he said.

The two of us stared at each other, tension crackling between us. Damyn looked at me with blazing intensity in his eyes, as if he wanted to make good on his threats… or as if he wanted to push me up against the wall and fuck me senseless.

Images rose for me instantly of his lips on mine, his hands rough on my body, the thought of him spanking my ass and shoving inside me. My thighs tightened, my breasts suddenly aching.

“You have to tell me,” I said.

He stepped closer to me, the heat of his body washing over me. Maybe I should have been intimidated instead of turned on when he towered over me like this, dominating me with his size.

“I will tell you what I know aboutyourstory,” he said softly, dangerously. “But I don’t owe you every part ofmystory.”

I stared up at him, my chin rising defiantly. “Yes, you do.”

Heat smoldered between us, and he frowned at my bold statement. He looked as if he wanted to ask why the hell I thought that, but then he whirled and walked away.

I let out a ragged breath, as if I couldn’t catch my breath around Damyn.

CHAPTER19

Honor

As I wentup the enormous staircase to the second floor, I could hear Damyn already going to work, cleaning up after the royals, and ordering Talisyn around to do the same. He was gathering piss-soaked rugs and pushing destroyed furniture out of the way.

I stood in the hallway, steeling myself to see Zehr. He hadn’t been in my ear all morning—or thankfully, last night when Talisyn and I were together—and I worried he was dead. I looked down at the package I carried with soup and leftovers from breakfast in case he was awake.

The possibility of Zehr being dead was a pit in my stomach.

And not just because of what it would mean with the Scourge.

I pushed the door open with my shoulder and then, once I glimpsed his dark hair against the pillow, I rushed forward, needing to know.

To my surprise, he sleepily blinked at me. Then he rasped in a voice full of sleep, “I know this isn’t a dream, because you look pissed off to see me alive.”

“I’m not.” I set the bundle on the nightstand and unwrapped it.

He cast a longing look at the soup, then said, “I'm too weak to eat. Feed me.”

“You are full of shit,” I told him. But I still sat on the edge of the bed, and spooned soup into his mouth like he was a little bird. It was a strange way to see the terrifying Lord of the Scourge, and I realized how gaunt he had become as I studied the hollows under his cheeks.

“So that's what became of the Lord of the Scourge,” Talisyn said from the doorway. “As he fades out of relevance.”

Zehr closed his eyes in protest. “Honor, I may have deceived and manipulated you and lightly tortured one of your lovers, but this seems like a disproportionate punishment, having to listen to the nattering of your dragon Royals.”

“You two are going to end up being the best of friends,” I said. “You have so much in common. You both annoy the shit out of me.”

I turned the responsibility for shoveling soup into Zehr's mouth over to Talisyn, and it was hard to tell which of them looked more mortified. I provided a general round ofyou owe meto everyone in the room, and then headed out to find a quiet place to call on my mother's ghost.

I hadn't been able to stop thinking about it since I got my hands on the box containing my mother's items. I could finally get in touch with her and see what she had to say about the threat we faced from Kallus.

But most of all, I just wanted to see her again. I had so many questions about what she had done with Lysander.
