He didn’t bother to answer me. His eyes had grown intense as he stared down at me, the prank forgotten as the two of us kissed with the water spraying down on us. His hands stroked across my wet shirt, then drew it over my head. The two of us stripped each other of our wet clothes, taking time to study each other’s bodies.

Water streamed down the hard pale lines of his shoulders, across the ridges of his abs. He was so beautiful in the moonlight, like a statue come to life.

“I can’t believe I spent two hundred years without you,” he murmured. “It seems like a waste.”

“Were you waiting for me?” I cocked an eyebrow at him.

“And I didn’t even realize it,” he answered. He caught me around the waist and set me on the edge of the fountain, sinking to his knees in front of me.

“You said you wanted me to grovel,” he told me, and then he pressed my knees apart. I leaned back, my breasts rising toward the moonlight, as his head dipped between my thighs. “Well, I’m on my knees.”

“And you’re sorry?” I asked archly, before gasping as his mouth met my clit. There was no preamble; he immediately set to working his tongue inside me. My toes curled against the pebbled bottom of the fountain.

He raised his eyebrows at me but didn’t answer, his tongue was otherwise engaged. This might be the one way the two of us didn’t fight. He ate me out with intense dedication, his hands looping around my thighs and pulling them onto his broad shoulders. He held me steady as my legs began to tremble. I ran my fingers through those dark, wild curls as my orgasm built, that sense of fevered intensity between my legs growing stronger and stronger. I let out a scream, and even with his face still buried between my thighs, he looked pleased with himself.

I let myself fall back against the grass, my legs still in the fountain, and he climbed on top of me. The two of us rolled across the grass, which was soft and lush because it was a dream. He rolled on top of me, holding his body carefully over mine.

“I am sorry,” he said. “I’ve been trying to make it right. I don’t know that Arren will ever forgive me, but… I’ll try.”

“I know.” I rested my hand lightly on the back of his neck. “I’m sorry I poisoned you and handed you over to Pend.”

Before he could answer, I tugged his face down to mine again. We both had things to apologize for, but it didn’t change the fact I’d felt this bond with Zehr from the first time he swaggered into my life.

There was noise outside, breaking through my dreams. Zehr pulled away, looking somber.

“What is that?” I breathed.

“Five hundred or so of your new best friends.”

I walked outside the castle to find Scourge pouring in through the woods, forming into a mass of rotten flesh and hundreds of faces. Somewhere in that crowd was Calla.

Familiar fear surged in my chest. It was impossible not to feel some fear when faced by the Scourge.

Then they knelt as one.

“All hail our queen.” Their voices rose into the sky.

CHAPTER25

Damyn

Talisyn rose suddenlyand paced the ransacked room, looking impatient and furious. I’d dragged him away to search for Teris’s Scourge stone. Since it hadn’t been on his body, maybe Joachim had hidden it somewhere.

I wouldn’t have pegged Joachim as a survivor, but he was always the oiliest of the Elder Royals.

“What?” I demanded, still sorting through Joachim’s ridiculous collection of precious gems. I was furious about the risks Honor had taken with her life, with the way she’d gone off to take over the damned Scourge kingdom, but there was nothing we could do about it now. Whatever she’d done, we’d need the Scourge stones. When Tal didn’t answer, I didn’t look away from my work as I added, “There’s no need to be emotional.”

“No need?” Tal echoed, before swiping his hand through his hair. “Sorry, but I don’t trust Zehr. Honor is too reckless.”

I snorted. She’d trusted the Royals, which had certainly been a reckless act as well. “Well, Zehr seems to be dying.”

“He doesn’t seemdeadwhen I’m feeling him and Honor through the bond.”

I raised my head, trying to keep my face blank, but I must have failed since it was Tal’s turn to scoff.

“What do you mean?”

“I can feel Honor’s… complicated feelings. And her happiness.”
