Luc

“Do you know how important today is for you, Lucien and Lucette?”

My two-year-old twins glance from their toys to me in the back of the Cullinan. The spacious interior of the SUV allows ample room for their car seats. Two pairs of bright sapphire blue eyes—so like mine—stare back.

I can’t believe how quickly time passed. One minute they’re bundled in my arms after Blair gave birth and the next, they’re celebrating their first birthday. Today, I take them to Banque Montaigne for the first time.

They’ll walk through the headquarters’ front doors as my father did with me. Like him, I will groom them for the role as CEO and Chairman of the Board. Whichever shows the best capability will run our family’s company. I will not choose based on their gender. Male or female can carry the mantle.

However, the family title follows tradition. Lucien is my heir as the Marquis de Blois. He will succeed me as Le Duc de Blois. My daughter carries the title Lady Lucette Valentine Montaigne.

My heart warms whenever I see them or think about how happy my life is with them and their mother in it. I never expected to have joy again. However, Blair changed the lonely course and made me love again. She filled the hole in my heart with her love. Then she gave me children and completed our family.

My smile grows at the thought of her as I look at Lucien and Lucette.

“We’re going to Banque Montaigne, our family’s centuries-old, multitrillion-dollar banking empire. The headquarters are in that skyscraper here in La Défense.”

They peek out the window to where I point. Their eyes widen as they tilt their heads back to see the top.

“Originally, we were the financiers to the French kings and the nobility. Then Banque Montaigne grew with offices and branches around the globe. I run it now and will prepare you to take over when you’re older. Come, let us go inside.”

They clap their hands and babble responses. I grin at their ability to hold brief conversations and join in as they speak.

Armand opens the door. I pass Lucien to him and hop out with Lucette, then set them on their feet and hold their hands. I nod at the security guard, who grins at them. They walk with me through the doors, and my heart fills with pride.

The next generation arrives because of my Blair, Ma Petite Fille, Ma Chérie, Mon Amour. My life is complete.

The End
