Emotion gathered in my eyes, threatening to fall. My whole life I had wanted his approval, now I had to decide what I wanted more.

"What did you expect me to do? Would you let Mom die? Or would you save her?" Raw pain flowed from me at the thought of Samantha being taken from me.

"Your mother is my true love," he replied, as if I didn't already know that.

"Yeah, and the hunter is mine."

His face transformed. There was a light that seemed to glow from his eyes and excitement that I had what he did. "You're sure."

"Yes. I felt the connection the first time I saw her."

"That is wonderful news! When do I meet her?" He clapped his hands together, and the clerk jerked in his chair, almost falling to the floor. My father forgot my transgression in his happiness.

"She doesn't exactly feel the same," I admitted.

"There is a solution for that," he replied as he folded into the chair next to mine.

"I've thought of that; I'm not kidnapping her like you did with Mom." I took another sip of the whiskey.

He nodded. "If you change your mind, the room is still open in the left tower. Made for a Goddess, it would have everything she needed while she was our guest."

"Nice way of putting it." I smiled at him over the rim of my almost-empty drink.

"But, son, you can't interfere again. Do not heal her with your powers or you chance eliminating your fated link. If she were to die, there are other ways of bringing her back. True love has options, but if you no longer have that, you have none."

"I can't stand by and watch her die, Dad," I said. I tossed the rest of the drink back and placed the empty glass on the table next to me.

"Then, if you are in that situation again, ask yourself if you would rather lose her completely by taking away your bond or if you still wanted the chance to fight for her. If her soul enters the river, a true love can retrieve her. Orpheus failed, but true love would not."

CHAPTER 38

Bellamy

The club'slight didn't hold the same appeal for me. The dancing women didn't entice me to get close and steal a sip. My only thought was of the demon hunter, my savior, and destruction all in one. I didn't have anywhere else to go after Alastor kicked us out. Hanging around the dragon wasn't an option. He had stormed off as soon as the elevator doors had slipped open.

So instead, I was here, tucked into the darkest corner of the room, watching the supernaturals dance and let loose. This place was a good idea. In the past, I had only been jealous of Lex and his friendship with Alastor, but that was when Alastor was my hero. Now, we probably had things in common. I observed the demigod as he charmed the patrons at his bar, easily switching from listening to flirting as he worked. I could do that job, if I actually knew how to mix drinks, and the crazy part was if I could get out of being King, I would do it happily.

My mind made up, I slipped from the booth and made it over to the thinning crowd around his bar. It was close to closing time, and the supes were heading home, wherever that may be. When he turned toward me, he didn't indicate that I was anydifferent from any of his other customers. He gave me a smile and asked what my poison was.

"Just water is fine," I replied. I tucked my tail around my leg, determined not to give anything away. It was a move I learned from my brother, he was always keeping his emotions hidden.

The side of his mouth quirked higher as he filled the glass with ice and H2O. He slid the cold drink across the smooth surface to me.

"On the house," he joked.

"Oh, so not that fancy water they get from exotic places around the world?" I asked.

"Not in the budget." He shrugged before wiping down the spot in front of him. It was already clean, so he was using the action to stall walking away.

"Question?" I asked when he remained silent. An eyebrow popped up, and I contained my smile. "I don't have a question. I can see you do. So ask."

"You've not been around. Where did you go?"

"You noticed my absence. I'm touched." I placed my hand over my heart and sighed dramatically.

He laughed, tossing the rag over his shoulder done with the ruse. "It is hard to miss the Demon Prince."

It was then I picked up on a stray thought he hadn't guarded enough. What does he want with Samantha?Ah, so this was about the hunter.
