“Get off my case. You know how I feel about it,” Cash huffs.

“Cash,” Jack says gruffly.

“I don’t want to go backwards!” Cash tells him angrily, and I can hear him shuffling around up front.

“Sometimes you gotta go backwards so you can move forward,” Jack says.

I can hear Cash sigh and imagine him running his hands through his hair like he does when he’s frustrated.

“Look, stop intimidating my girlfriend,” Cash says.

“She’s your girlfriend now?” Jack laughs darkly.

“I don’t know. Just whatever you’re doing, stop.”

“What am I doing?”

“You’re giving her the ‘dad’ look.” He pauses. “I don’t need you to protect me or whatever it is you think you’re doing.”

“What the fuck is a ‘dad’ look?”

There’s a long stretch of silence and I close the office door, already feeling like I’ve overheard too much.

FUCKING PEPPERMINTS

She’s A Beauty by The Tubes

Ipull down the gate and lock the front door as soon as Jack leaves. My mind is definitely not on working, and I need a break.

I walk to the back office and find Sasha bent over my desk, wiping down the dust covered wood. Her shorts do little to cover that perfect ass of hers, and I can’t help but lean against the door jamb and admire the view. They didn’t make girls like her when I was twenty-three. She hears me clear my throat and peers over her shoulder at me. Little tendrils of hair fall across her face, and she smiles at me. God, she is fucking beautiful.

And mine.

She knows I’m staring at her ass, and she makes a point to give me a good show. At one point I might have thought she was innocent, but she’s the one running the show here, and I’m helpless to do anything about it.

She straightens up, holding the camera in her hand. “Is this for me?” she asks innocently.

“I saw it at Angel’s thrift store and thought of you. I was gonna give it to you the other day, but…” I leave that hang in the air because we both know what happened.

Recognition sparks in her eyes, and she knows that I got it for her long before anything happened between us. I can’t help but be mesmerized by her smile, so genuine it lights up the dingy space of my office.

“It looks to be from the forties, I think.”

“It’s old, I know.” I start to take it from her, and she pulls it away from me.

“I love it.” She stares back down, inspecting it. “I’ll have to see if they still make film for it.” She tucks it away in her bag protectively and then smiles at me.

I like being the one to make her smile.

“I’m sorry if Jack was an asshole to you.”

“He comes in here a lot,” she says.

I sigh and lean on the desk next to her. “Remember when I said I come with baggage?” I ask.
