“Ugh,” she grumbles teasingly. “This is one of your punk bands.”

“Do you want me to answer the question or not?”

She laughs. “Go on.”

“I was in middle school when I first sawThe ClashonMTV. The lyrics and the sound resonated with me. I couldn’t stop watching the bass player. Simmone was versatile and innovative. He had these baselines that you could tell were reggae influenced, and I wanted to learn how to do that.”

Sasha smiles goofily at me, and I realize I may have been a bit too animated for the hiking trail, so I shove my hands in the pockets of my joggers.

“I love it when you talk about music,” she says.

I smile shyly. “I get a little carried away.”

“It’s a shame you don’t play anymore.”

“I didn’t start playing to become famous, not like Jack.” I knit my brows together. “I just loved playing withhim. Sometimes it was like we were one person; I knew what he needed before he even had to ask. We brought out the best in each other,” I explain. “It wouldn’t have been the same playing with anyone else.”

“What happened to the band? Why did you break up?” she asks, carefully.

“A lot of reasons,” I sigh. “Mine and Jack’s relationship is complicated.” I try my best to explain without giving away too much that I’m not comfortable with.

“But you’re friends again now?”

“It was a long road back.”

“I can tell he really cares about you,” Sasha says.

“Don’t let Jack intimidate you. He can be an asshole, but his heart is always in the right place. He just doesn’t have the best execution,” I jest.

“You’re right, he is an asshole,” she laughs. “But in a weird way, very sweet.”

“Annoying is what it is,” I grumble.

We continue walking the path and I feel a little out of breath, not used to this type of exercise.

“You doing okay?” Sasha asks.

“It’s not like I hike every weekend,” I grumble.

“It’s not much farther.”

Oh thank God, I say to myself. She was right, we only have to walk a little ways longer before the waterfall comes into view, cascading over moss and fern covered rocks.

“Wow,” I say out loud. “It’s like I’m not even in California anymore.”

I stand staring at it, not realizing there are people behind us. Sasha grabs my arm to pull me out of the way.

“I’m glad it was worth the hike for you,” Sasha says as we move over to a shady spot in front of the falls. It’s about fifty feet high and running pretty smooth, landing in a pool where a few people are wading.

“I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s pretty cool,” I laugh.

I watch as a few people daringly climb the rocks that lead to a cliff behind the waterfall.

“I’m not doing that,” I say flat out.

Sasha laughs, pulling a couple of water bottles out of her bag. “Don’t worry; I wasn’t going to ask you to.”

She stands, pulling the camera level with her eyes, makes a couple of adjustments and takes a picture, moving around to get a different angle. I stand next to her, admiring the view.
