Carmelo snorted. “No, fuck, I live in an apartment near the center of town, it’s small but, it’s home,” he scratched his head now. “Well, no, that’s not exactly true, it’s where I sleep and eat and do my laundry… it doesn’t feel much like home,” he said into the dawn light. He swallowed but his throat stuck together. That’s why he was getting a dog. That’s why he needed to sort his life out, right?

Nix watched carefully. “This is more like your home, Sergeant.”

Carmelo found himself nodding. “Yeah, this is where I feel… more myself. Able to relax. Free. Not alone. Safe. Yeah.” He looked straight back at Nix, as the two men shared a moment of common ground. The ex-con and the police Sergeant. “Yeah, this is more my home,” Carmelo finished quietly.

Nix nodded, too. “You should just stay here, you’re here so much.”

Carmelo puffed out a big breath of air. “I couldn’t, that would be… ridiculous, a Police Sergeant living at the MC… that would just be…” He trailed off, feeling something pull in his chest. “I’d be completely cut off… at work… my family, my friends, they’d all be gone in a heartbeat…”

“Yeah well, the ones who matter to you would stay with you, man.” Nix shrugged and smiled. "After all, there's no place like home."

And Carmelo knew there really wasn't.
