“This time Valentina runs at Nikon, making her first mistake. He turns and ends up elbowing her in the face; she’s knocked to the ground by the force. There was blood everywhere, both Nikon’s and Valentina’s now. I was going to go in the ring to stop it, but other soldiers held me back. Mikhail had noticed my reaction, so I had to hide my anger. The bastard was sitting there smiling about the fact that his daughter was injured and was going to get a beating as she still hadn’t got up.” Luka walks over to the windows lost in his memories.

“The sick bastard. I swear when I manage to get my hands on him, I will make his death last days.” I feel tremendous rage, I can’t believe someone would do that to his daughter.

“Sick is not the word for that man. Nikon then climbs on top of Valentina who we all believe is unconscious as she hasn’t moved at all. But we underestimated her cunning, Nikon most of all, a mistake that would be his last. He brings his blade to her body and runs it up her chest whispering to her as he does. To this day I don’t know what he said to her.” He shook his head. “Then he runs it against her neck, starting to draw blood, ready to mark her. That’s when her legs come up, locking around his body, and she slices his wrist- the one he was holding his knife in-which he drops immediately. She tips his body backwards, flipping herself at the same time, ending up on top of him. Nikon tries to bring his legs up to get to her, but ends up roaring in pain as she’s got him pinned down with her knees. The cuts she inflicted inhibited his movements and he was unable to remove her. His inability was his undoing. That’s when he lies there cold, staring at her, as she smiles at him with blood running down her nose and over her face.” He took a long breath.

“What happened next?”

“Well, I remember her talking to him. She’d said that she heard he likes to cut women up, and that he liked how it felt to scar their pretty faces.”

I nodded, eager to hear more.

“Then she cut three big slashes across his face, one on his forehead, the other across his nose through to his right eye, and the last from his lip to his cheek.”

My eyes widened.

“Nikon howled in anguish, even trying in his lethargic state to flip her off him but fails.”

“Once Valentina had finished the final cut, she stepped off him and he lay motionless on the floor of the ring.”

I couldn’t help but feel proud of her.

“She looked up at her father in disgust and then left the ring,” Luka finished, staring absently out of the window.

I’m astounded. My Little Vixen is a true warrior. I knew she was a fighter, but to be fighting her Papa’s soldiers at such a young age? My God she’s amazing and so strong.

“He told me‘Your face is such a pretty canvas for my work and you will remember my face every time you look in the mirror’.” Valentina says.

We all whip around at the sound of her speaking and just stare at her. She ignores us all and walks over to the sunken sofas, sitting down and picking up the remote, turning the TV on.

“How long is the pizza going to be, I’m starving,” she shouts.

We all just look at each other dumbstruck. I have no clue how long she was there to hear Luka telling the story, but it must have been a while for her to know Luka didn’t know what Nikon said to her.

I nod to Misha. He and Pasha go off to order the pizza, Luka goes into the kitchen and I make my way over to her. I sit next to her as she sits with her legs tucked underneath her. I grab one of the fur blankets and place it over her lap. She looks at me and smiles, going back to choose a movie to watch.

“Valentina, I can’t believe what that prick made you do; I swear when I get my hands on him…”

“Luka had no right in telling you my past Kai. My past is the past and it needs to stay that way. I’ve had to make my peace with it and so does everyone else. I don’t want anyone’s pity or remorse; I lived it, that’s enough. I also survived and managed to escape. It’s my fight, it will always be.”

“I’m here for you now Valentina, don’t you understand that.”

“I do Kai, and I thank you for that. I don’t think you quite understand though, if my Papa finds me, he will stop at nothing to get me back.”

“Well, you’re mine now so he will have a fight on his hands. He will never take you away from me!”

“I hope you’re right Kai, I really do.”

Valentina chooses ‘Underworld’ and snuggles down onto the sofa to watch it. Luka comes out of the kitchen with a hot chocolate for her and hands it to her with a smile. She looks at the cup and, noticing the small marshmallow’s floating on top, she beams back at him. He takes a seat to the right of her, looking at the film she has chosen.

“Not this again Lena, you must have seen it about 50 times already.”

“You know it’s one of my favourites Luka, now shut up and watch it.”

He chuckles and shuts up to watch the film. A flash of jealousy washes over me with the ease they have in each other’s company. I contemplate staying and having pizza and watching the movie with her, but I know I need to speak to Ida. Especially if I wish to keep my promise to Valentina about keeping her safe. I need to be that person that doesn’t let her down, the person she can trust and rely on.

“I’m going now Valentina, don’t wait up, I’ll be late. Okay?”

“I won’t. I’m watching this and eating my pizza then I’ll be going to bed. Be safe Kai.”
