Page 70 of The Darkness Within

“Wait,” he calls from the black room. “You don’t have to go.”

I blink wide-eyed into the darkness. Then it hits me. I knew this was his room. I watched him go into it less than twelve hours ago. Does that mean I want it to be him?

I lick my dry lips as I debate.

“I just need to cuddle,” I say lamely. I hold back the cringe as I wait for his response.

“I’m pretty good at that. Just be careful of my ribs. I think I broke one,” he says, and then a bedside light is flicking on, and his black silk sheets puddle around his waist as he half sits up, grabbing on to my attention with both hands.

Even black and blue, he draws the eyes. Like a freaking magnet, I drift across the room to him, to his bed. He gestures to the surface next to him, and I chew on my lower lip some more. A soft smile tilts his busted lips. It looks painful.

“Did you put anything on your eye?” I ask, my gaze running over his face.

“I’ll be fine, just a black eye for a week,” he says, shrugging away my question. He pats the bed again. “Are you joining me?”

“Just for cuddles, right?”

I am pretty sure anything more would destroy him unless I was the one in control. And that thought right there twists my stomach and clenches my core at the same time. As much as I love to be bossed around and told what to do sexually, being the one to call the shots appeals to me way more than it should as an omega.

“No wandering hands, promise.”

Relenting, I climb up on his bed and crawl into his arms. Resting my head on his shoulder, I snake my hand across the expanse of his abs. A sigh puffs from him, and he adjusts the covers to tug me beneath them with him. He flicks off the light, his arm tightening around me. As soon as we are situated, I relax into him. I keep my touch PG as my omega drives me to run my palm over his skin, soaking in as much of his warmth and scent as possible.

I am surrounded in the comfort of him. It is the best feeling in the entire world. I knew from his fighting that he could protect me, and something deep inside of me desires that as much as it craves all of their touch.

“I’m sorry for what I said,” I whisper into the darkness.

He stills. Not that I can see him. But I can sense it, as if he stops breathing altogether.

“If I wanted a pack, it would be yours.”

“Audrey, you don’t have to say that.”

I curl my fingers around his side as I attempt to get closer. “No, but I want to. And it is the truth.”

A soft purr vibrates through him, soothing my rough edges even more.

“Dean–Saint, I’ve been through a lot. And it is hard for me to trust.”

“I know.”

It’s my turn to freeze. He sounds so sure of knowing something.

“You are one of the De Luca twins. Everyone thinks you're dead.”

What is air? I can’t breathe. Panic attempts to take hold, and then he runs his fingers down my spine and presses a soft kiss to the top of my head.

“You’re safe with me. I won’t let any of them hurt you again.”

I want to scoff at his words, let them roll off of me, and shrug them off as inconsequential, but part of me wants the opposite. I can’t hide my perfume as it blooms. All of my emotions in the betraying scent.

“We will hunt each and everyone of them down until you have nothing to fear.”

“Saint,” I sigh.

“No, I promise. Even if you reject us in the end, you’ll be safe to live your life.”

My chest tightens. I want that. Safety. No fear. Home.
