“Like what?” I asked.

“Like things that are important, and that I believe can help you,” she said. “And help Rob in the process.”

“Great. Will they by any chance be true?”

“Of course. You know I don’t lie.”

“Do I?”

Now I’ve had no choice but to tell the jury about her condition, the real reason for her absence, knowing as I did that it would elicit for her even more sympathy. And make her more believable in the process. Which right now is the whole ball game, at least as far as her kid sister is concerned.

“How are you feeling now?” I ask.

“Much better, thank you. And strong enough to be back.”

“We all thank you for that,” I say.

“You’re all very welcome.”

She smiles at the jury. I see some of the jury members smile back at her.

“Now, the last time you were here, you told the court that you weren’t sure of the exact time Rob Jacobson left your home the night of the murders. Isn’t that correct?”

“That’s what I said.”

“And I had just asked you to describe in just what way you were together that night. That was right before Mr. Jacobson fell ill. Do you recall that sequence of events?”

“Hard to forget.”

I shoot a quick look at Jacobson.

For some reason, he’s smiling.

“So let’s start over. Having had some time to reflect, do you now remember when Rob Jacobson left you that night?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.

“Whendidhe leave?”

My sister has a sheepish look on her face, as if somehow she’s been caught being a very bad girl.

“He didn’t leave.”

I look back over at my client. He doesn’t call Brigid a liar this time. He doesn’t fall over the table, faking a heart attack to protect his precious prenup.

But he’s still smiling, even more brilliantly than before.

“IT WAS THE NIGHTof that stinking prom,” Paul Biondi is telling Jimmy. “Some fancy spot in Manhattan. We were still living over by Little Neck Parkway at the time.”

“The Midtown Loft and Terrace,” Jimmy says. “Where the prom was. I checked.”

“Whatever you say.”

“How’d they meet? Lily being from Little Neck Parkway and him from Central Park West?”
