Her ability to look at the problem from all sides was impressive as hell. It wasn’t anything he hadn’t already considered but talking with her helped him solidify his plans. “Kade will.” Trust had to begin somewhere. If the other wolf was going to betray him, he may as well learn early in their new relationship. “I have no idea about the black wolf. That elusive bastard keeps a low profile. I’ve never seen him or had direct contact. Hell, I’m not even sure what he looks like.”

“He’s the black wolf, right? So he’ll have black hair and eyes. I can see how that would make it easier to get lost in the human population.”

“All I have is a phone number. I’ll contact both before we head into the alphas’ dens.”

“You’re convinced neither of them is working with the mage?” She shook her head. “I never in a million years figured I’d be discussing wolves and magic, that both were real. Even after everything, it’s weird.”

“You’re an amazing woman. One in a billion. There’s no other woman who’d handle what you have with such strength and courage.”

“I’m scared to the tips of my toes,” she whispered, as if making some dire confession.

He leaned down and pressed his forehead to hers. “That’s what makes you so amazing.” It was time to go. “As for the other lone wolves—none of us asked for this curse. All of us becoming lone wolves at the same time is no coincidence. Whatever is happening now, I’m convinced the roots go back to the time of our first shift.”

He raised his head and looked deep into her eyes. It gave him a primal thrill to see them. They shared not only their unique coloring but so much more. The bonds between them strengthened with each passing hour.

Magic.

He ignored the murmured fear in the back of his brain. If his instincts failed him now, he was already dead. Leaving her was no longer an option.

She met his gaze without hesitation. “Make me one promise.”

“If I can.”

“If you’re right about all this, then magic brought us together. Maybe even bound us.” She pressed her fingers against his lips before he could deny what they both knew to be the truth. “If the plan for the other two lone wolves is the same, there are two more women out there destined to meet Kade and—what is the name of the black wolf?”

“Dagen. Dagen Kern.”

“Right. As I was saying, if there are two women destined to collide with Kade and Dagen the way we did, we must protect them. That means you do whatever you must to ensure this ends with us, no matter what it takes. Do you understand me?”

He understood she was ready to give her life for him and people she’d never met. Her courage slayed him. He wrapped his arms around her, wishing he could protect her from the world. “I’ll do what needs to be done.”

Which was whatever it took to keep Zoe alive.

“You’ve heard something?” Charles was finishing up a call as Solange strolled into his office. If they didn’t find Devlin soon, she’d have to take more drastic measures. But those were a last resort. There was still time.

He tossed down the phone and began to pace. “They were in the Bronx. A scout missed check-in. When they searched the area around his last known location, there was a cleanup crew repairing a broken window at a house in a quiet neighborhood. My men moved in after they left. The scent of a wolf lingered in the garage.”

Her stomach clenched. So close. Her fingers played over the chain around her neck. “They won’t go far. Devlin Moore will want answers.” The lone wolf would want to eliminate the threat to him…and the woman. Assuming her spell worked properly, and there was no reason to believe it hadn’t. He’d kept the woman with him, hadn’t left her to fend for herself.

“I hope you’re right.” His tone gave her pause. It sounded almost like a threat. She dismissed the notion. They’d been together for a century. He was worried. That’s all it was.

She strolled to him and slid her hands over his silky shirt. “I’m right. We’ll have them in our grasp soon. Then everything we want will be ours.”

Chapter Nineteen

Zoe peered out the hotel window and stared at the city skyline. The trip back had been surprisingly uneventful and way too fast. Her stomach was a ball of nerves. Like butterflies dancing a conga line.

Devlin’s hands wrapped around her shoulders. “Come away.” Unlike her, he was calm and composed.

“I hate waiting.”

“It’s better to approach the alphas at sundown. If something happens, it’s easier to hide our actions from humans.”

“I know.” She let him lead her over to the bed. Sitting with her elbows resting on her knees, face buried in her hands, she took a deep breath. They hadn’t talked much since they’d left Rose Cottage. Until this was over, there wasn’t much to say.

He crouched in front of her and pulled her hands away from her face. “I’ll keep you safe.”
