Karelis

We’d gone to their suite, across the hall from our room. I didn’t even know the academy had suites. It wasn’t like I had been invited over to anyone’s room or anything and who could, given the airtight laws and rules of this place.

“You all share the same room?” I asked, trying to take my mind off the student I’d just seen. He was on the brink of death and if he had been human instead of shifter, things would’ve ended differently for him. I hoped that he was fine. Casimir said he would take care of everything. When he spoke in that lower tone, what I suspected was his warrior voice, I believed everything he said.

“Not the same room.” Blaze’s voice startled me. After seeing what I had earlier, I supposed everything would startle me for a while. How had he beaten us back?

My hand flew to my chest and both my wolves were on high alert despite feeling safe around these men. “You scared the shit out of me.”

Blaze tugged a hand through his dark hair and cursed under his breath. “I’m sorry. What’s going on? I thought you two were taking Karelis back to her dorm room. Where is Casimir?”

His questions poured out of him in a string, all connected together. His wolf reached out to both of mine, digging for something. I wondered if he knew or had an inkling that I had two wolves—that any of them were aware that there were two animals inside me.

Adan still had a grip on my hand. “There was another murder—or an attempted murder. We saw the lights.”

Blaze stepped forward. “Stop. Not here.” He pulled some keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door and pushed it forward, waving me inside. “There are ears around here.”

I walked in and inhaled deeply. All of their scents mingled in the air. I didn’t know what I expected from a boys’ suite, but this wasn’t it. Perhaps I was working from movies or books that had been snuck to me, but I thought that it would be a mess. Boxer shorts and discarded food containers all over the place. What I found was the opposite. The small kitchen area, which was nothing more than a counter and a cabinet, were clean and clutter free. Clean glasses lay upside down on a small drying rack. There was a leather sofa that looked well used but was also clean. There was nothing on the coffee able. On the desk was a coffee cup full of pens and highlighters.

I shot a quick text to June, telling her I was okay.

“Everything okay?” Adan asked me. He had let go of my hand, presumably because we were in the safety of their place.

“Just texting June to tell her I am okay. She must be worried.”

Blaze chuckled. “She thought we weren’t going to take care of you?”

I shrugged one shoulder. “She was just worried about a friend. That’s all.”

“Tell me what happened out there.” Blaze sat on the couch and tugged my hand, wordlessly asking me to join him.

Adan and I told him everything, and I couldn’t help the tears that escaped my eyes as we recalled the night. Something about these events—the lights—those lavender lights put Night on high alert. Her snarling hadn’t stopped since we saw them. It had died down a bit, but it was there, always under the surface.

Adan perched on the arm of the couch. “Cas will take care of everything. I don’t know what’s going on, but we will watch out for you.”

I laughed. “Weren’t you three already watching out for me? What? You didn’t think I’d notice?”

Both Blaze and Adan blushed a bit. Adan rubbed at the back of his neck, while Blaze scrubbed his hand over his face. Adan rolled his eyes. “We thought we were being a bit covert, but I guess that was silly.”

I picked at my boots, or June’s boots. “Why?” I asked. “Why me?”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Casimir

My temples throbbed as a hollow feeling burrowed into my chest. I let out another yawn and pushed the button on the side of my phone to check the time. Nearly dawn.

The headmistress walked in. She had no makeup on and street clothes in the form of a hoodie and matching sweatpants. Her hair was up in a ponytail and she had sneakers on. It was always weird to see teachers and administrators outside of the academy. They almost looked like people who didn’t enjoy torturing us for pleasure and a paycheck.

Almost.

Of course, the couple at the diner were dressed to date.

“I don’t know if you will be happy or upset to know that Daniel will make a full recovery.”

I sighed and rolled my eyes. I wasn’t trying to be a douche, but her routine of nailing me as the bad guy was stale as fuck. The only one they picked on more was Blaze. “I was the one who called the emergency line to let you know that Daniel was hurt. Come on, Regina. Let’s not do this dance at almost four o’clock in the fucking morning.”

One of her eyebrows lifted. “Come now, Casimir. You know I have to ask these questions.”
