“Soon, I promise.” Hopefully I would be long gone before she gets sick of empty promises. Though, it would be simpler to take Freda as my mate over a dwarven male, it would keep Felman off my back for good, and Freda was a noble, a titan noble, and a female. There would be no fears of what the worm would do to Kal, and hell, would he even be open to it if I asked? Endangering Kal’s life for children was not worth it, but I wanted children someday.

I saw her, the one I came to this dreadful party to see, the Madam. The old woman who hid away from her own kind only to emerge with one of these spectacular balls. Her house color pattern was silver and pale green. She wore her hair in a two braided buns on the side of her head littered with small red bows to match her flowing ball gown.

I needed to get to her or at least find out where she was going. She graced her parties with a passing appearance in each section of the rooms and gardens before retiring long before the party ended. And no one would see her until the next party.

She slipped into the balcony area of the ballroom a guard blocked. At least I now knew where she was hiding.

“Ladies and Gentlemen!” An announcer bellowed over the microphone. The crowd parted to either side of the room. An usher approached, a small dwarf even by dwarf standards.

“Sir. Your pet, along with all the new pets making their debut, will be introduced soon. You must stand at the stairs and escort him.”

Shit. I didn’t know this. I hope there wasn’t anything else I had to do. I was far too focused on his training that I had forgotten mine. I joined the others and waited for the list of new thralls to join their masters, and I watched as they escorted them around the room, showcasing them for all to see. The announcer had no long drawn out name for Kal. He was simply Kal Crane, and I couldn’t stop myself from smiling when all eyes fell on him. I noticed they covered the scar and the patch of hair with a gentleman's top hat, but it wouldn’t have mattered to me if he had left it alone.

I held out my arm for him to take, and like the others, I escorted him around the room, but I didn’t give a damn about anyone else; I didn’t even want him here. I wanted him locked away, far from everyone here. He looked up at me, and I got a good look at the lens I bought for him, a symbol of my house displayed proudly for these bastards to see.

When he tried to part ways, I held on to him, I had forgotten they must have instructed him to join the rest of the pets in an adjacent private room. I wanted to whisk him out of here, but I let him go. My work here was too important to do what I should have done, which was to say to hell with these people and this party, to hell with everything.

The introductions were over, and I was alone again, and I hated it.

“He’s pretty in a damaged sort of way. Is that what you like? Damaged toys?” Freda approached from behind once music filled the area again.

“It gives him character, unlike the half-dead puppets you all call pets.” I wonder if I did a good enough job of hiding the fact that I wanted to kill her for insulting my mate.

“He is a little beauty.” Felman approached. “Perhaps we can arrange something between us. I have a stallion that would be perfect for him. He’s handsome, big, and primed for fucking. I put a chastity belt on his cock, and he hadn’t been able to cum in two months so far. What I wouldn’t give to watch him unleash his fury inside your lithe prince.”

“He’s undergoing training. I thought he could perform tonight, but I’ve changed my mind.”

I watched as Kal entered the next room to take a seat when one of those pets held his foot out, causing him to trip and stumble. He regained control and swung on the male, slapping him across the face. The music ceased for a moment before picking up again.

“Oh, you think that’s funny?” Freda scolded me for laughing at the incident.

“He has spunk, that’s for sure,” Felman smirked.

“I told you he still needed training,” I said and walked away; I needed to catch the Madam before she retired to her guarded chambers for the night.

There was no way I would get past her guards at the stairs to the balcony, so I climbed towards the upper level away from the crowd to catch her alone above. She was alone with a cart of snacks and wine by her side. She noticed me straight away but did not yell or alert her guards from what I could see.

“I haven’t had a handsome man attempt a private rendezvous since I was a young girl. I guess I must still got it.” She smirked.

“Madam.” I bowed and sat down to avoid the guards or onlookers. “Didn’t mean to disturb you like this, but this is the only time I would get to meet with you.”

“And please tell me what was so important that you needed to meet me? Being seen at one of my events satisfies most nobles; you watch your whores prance about, and you leave and come back for round two or three.” She shrugged disinterestedly. “Though you have never attended before, the moment I saw you, I wondered if you were here for another reason besides clout chasing.”

“Can we speak privately?”

“We are private, sir. That’s why I’m up here.”

I sighed. “Do you remember when the portal station was destroyed? A piece of the structure also entered this world. The explosion blew a massive chunk of it into the seas in this region.”

She laughed. “Need more lost tech, shield builder? There’s plenty at the black market. I should call my damn guards to throw you out of here if all you’re going to do is waste my time chasing more wealth.”

I could tell I lost her; she was an old and tired woman. One of the oldest titans in the city, and one of the few, like me, who was nobility long before the destroyed portal stranded us here. The upstarts who sought to take advantage of our predicament assassinated most of the other true nobles.

That was why I needed Freda and Felman, but the Madam stood alone, or appeared to be. She proved that she could not be dispatched easily.

I needed more to offer than just the promise of more wealth.

“I’ve rebuilt the portal. And it works, just as I did back home. All I’m missing is the rune to power it. I thought I had it, but it turned out to be a fake.” There, all my cards. I hoped Felman’s fears about her proved true. That she too was searching for the rune to return home. If she has already found it, then I need to convince her to give it to me.
