When we finished, I got on top to rest my face on his cold chest. I felt a headache worsen, maybe from cumming too hard.

“Did I squirt some into your brain?” Thorsten laughed when I complained about my head.

“Gross.” I chuckled and winced. “Maybe it’s the changing weather here or something.”

“Could be catching something. In the thrall guide, it says humans catch a virus you call colds.”

“And your kind don’t catch colds?” I asked, lowering my voice after realizing they could hear us.

“How many times do I have to tell you to let the outside world die when we’re alone?” He knew what I was doing.

“It’s easier to do that when we make love, but after… it’s difficult. They need to respect me if I’m to be a dive leader.”

“A lot of my kind take orders from me without respecting me. They respect my power over them. The same goes for your teammates; you have the power to fire them, my love.”

The knock at the door startled us. It was Dean informing Thorsten…or me that the equipment had fried. I waited for a good five minutes before following Thorsten to the surface, and by the looks I received, I didn’t think my plan to hide what was going on worked.

“What happened? Do we have the tools to fix it?”

“Nope and the wires are fried to bits.”

“What were the results from the last minute before malfunction?” Thorsten asked, checking the screen.

“The meter went haywire around this point.” Raze pointed at the graph.

“We won’t be able to send any more equipment down there.” I huffed. “I’m going to suit up and take a test dive and see what I can find in the area.”

“No, you’re not,” Thorsten said, looking at me like I had lost my mind.

“We can’t rely on tech, and it’ll be a quick look around and back to the surface.”

“Alone?”

“We’ve done it before.” Lala intervened. “I don’t mind doing it myself if I have to. It’s just a quick elevator ride down.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, unsure of letting her do it.

“Yeah, I’ll be tanked up, and it’s a quick dip.”

“Good.” Thorsten grabbed one of the tanks chosen for her based on her weight, while the others helped her get suited up and ready for the dive.

I set up the elevator, a cane attached to the ship's edge, a long thick wire with over ten small standing and gripping platforms attached. We used it for quickie dips to scout the waters below when equipment wasn’t available. We used it during actual dives to conserve energy on the way down. My hands trembled; I didn’t know why I was nervous, but I was.

She was ready and stepped onto the starting platform while Dean lowered her into the water using the crane. Thorsten watched me as if he was scolding me with his mind. I didn’t know how he expected me to lead this team if I didn’t stick my neck out at all.

Ten minutes had passed when Dean pulled the switch to raise the elevator only to have the thing sputter into smoke.

“Shit, put out that fire!” I ordered and check the water to see how far it pulled her up. “Why isn’t she giving us a signal?” I sighed.

“Give her time.” Thorsten moved to touch my shoulder but didn’t. “She’s here because she’s talented, right?”

“Yeah, but…” Fuck it, I reached for my flippers and prepared to make the dive. A rad suit was already required of everyone to have on if we needed to do these quickie dives. It was just a matter of getting into the water as fast as possible, and I didn’t need a tank. I dove in before he could catch me. The waters were murky, making it impossible to get a clear visual. Still, I followed each platform into the abyss. It didn’t take long to reach the last platform, but Lala was nowhere in sight. Where the hell did she go?! What happened? I thought, letting go of the wire just a little to venture out more. It was stupid, but I trusted myself to find my way back to the platform, and I didn’t plan to go far.

I saw a flipper lodged in a thick piece of metal scaffolding and rushed to it, but the wearer wasn’t in them. What the hell happened? I wondered as I tried to decide if I should venture deeper inside what looked like a small rusted metal tunnel. No guts, no glory. I ventured into the dark using my sense of touch to navigate until I felt something hard and then soft obstructing my way. The hair tangled in my hands told me all I needed to know. I pulled at her, hoping to dislodge her and bringing her along, but the tank wouldn’t budge and the hissing sound was like a warning alert. I felt light-headed like I was spinning in the dark. Help! I wanted to cry out. Water slowly seeped inside my nostrils.

Something grabbed me! I panicked and kicked to no avail and was dragged back to the surface before the water threatened to invade my body. It was Thorsten.

He had flung me back onboard. “Are you insane?! Never do that again.” He yelled, his silver eyes shifting.
