“I don’t know ask them.”

He cleared his throat. He was still angry, but I didn’t care, I was not going to apologize to him, even if I was touched that he tried to help me.

“I had to at least try to save my dad.” I spoke up. “And I couldn’t pass up someone willing to help, even if they wanted something in return. I made stupid choices and did some stupid things, but he still came through.”

“And I didn’t.”

“It’s not like that.”

“Then what is it like? I’m a fuck up. I tried to help too, but I guess trying doesn’t matter. It’s about who comes through, and who doesn’t, right?” He huffed and sat down in a ragged chair.“I never thought I would see the day you would become like any whore in the city.”

“To hell with you, Jaxon.” I replied, getting heated. “That’s not how being a thrall even works. They don’t believe in having sex with our kind.” I explained, trying my best to save face. Denying my relationship with Thorsten hurt, he was the only man I’ve ever loved, and here I was pretending nothing was going on between us. Including being afraid of being heard on the ship like he was a dirty secret. If he didn’t care about anyone knowing when he had the most to lose, then why should I? It made me sick, this fear. I knew what it felt like to be treated this way back in Vanir. To be toyed with and sat aside. It wasn’t fair.

“He was fucking you real good at the shop and on that fancy dive ship.”

“How…?”

“They think they are so secretive. When they leave the safety of their castle, anything goes. The prince of Jötun meeting up with a bunch of foreign divers, and none of us would notice? Yeah, right. There’s a fucking vid of you two fucking. And someone on your team got paid big bucks for details about the ship and what goes on there.” He gulped down his drink and poured another. “Dive teams are already forming to beat you guys to the loot.”

I swallowed hard and licked my dry lips. There was a vid of us making love, there was a vid of us making love and Jaxon saw that. “Where is this vid?”

“Where the hell do you think? A vid of an actual titan and one fucking a human male. It’s all over the fucking net.” He sighed. “At least I now know why you didn’t fight hard enough to escape.”

“Jaxon, I know you’re hurt, but that’s no reason to take your bullshit out on me. I’m sorry, but I can’t return your feelings.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I wanted to see if you were okay, and I need to find my dad,” I said, wanting to forget about that vid and finish the task I came here for.

He shook his head and smirked like I was an idiot. “Shouldn’t your wonderful titan lover have that info?”

“He should, but he never told me.” I choked out the words. “If you help me, I can talk him into letting you in on our dive job. I’m surrounded by old teammates, but I don’t know any of them that well. I mostly stayed to myself, and I guess I’m paying for it. I don’t trust any of them to have my back down there.”

“His little collar seems to be rather loose if he’s sending you on dive jobs.”

“My collar…” My voice was barely above a whisper. I had almost forgotten about this thing. It was becoming apparent that Jaxon didn’t want to help me and yet I couldn’t do this alone. Perhaps I could use this collar as my excuse to get him to help me. He may not like me, but would he just toss away years of our friendship and be okay with my death? “I need to do something about this.” I lifted my neck so he could get a good look. “It looks beautiful, but it’s full of poison that could kill me in seconds. I’ve seen it in action.” I tried not to picture Diana slumped on the floor.

Jaxon grinned as though he had heard the best news yet. “I knew you weren’t happy with him. Ya gotta pretend to be, or he’ll kill you, that’s why your eye is messed up.. He did that, didn’t he?” He sat down his glass and wrapped his arms around me, I didn’t like the crazed wide eyed glint. “I knew it.”

I wanted to protest that I didn’t believe Thorsten would ever use it on me, but I remained silent. When I moved away, he filled a dirty shot glass with more booze and gulped it all down, and poured another. “That’s why they’re working on getting rid of them for good. Killing them all, so no one has to go through this shit ever again.”

“What?”

“A resistance! Each city has a cell that’s getting stronger with every day that passes.”

“And there’s one here too? How do you know any of this?”

“Why do you think they don’t show themselves to us? They have no real power other than the human goons they can pay off. There isn’t that many of them compared to us.”

“If it was that easy, we could have done it ages ago,” I argued. “Did you even see this so-called resistance?”

“I know Mel and Davi are members. I was in for a few months until I betrayed them for you.”

“Betrayed?”

“That silver ball, I knew it was something important because the resistance sent me to steal it and bring it to HQ, but I wanted to sell it for you.”

“And you didn’t bother to warn me that we were messing around with something that important or that some group of rebels might be pissed off once they found out you sold it to a titan? I’m in this mess because of you and your fucking friends, and you have the nerve—”
