I was at a loss because I couldn’t think of anything I could know that would be of any use. Or better yet, I didn’t want to give them any information about the rune. There was no way I wanted to be the cause of why Thorsten couldn’t return home, and I still didn’t trust Davi. “What do you need to know?”

“That rune—”

“No deal. I haven’t seen that thing since you gave it to him.”

“Then what good are you?

“The last time I trusted you, I ended up sold and made a whore.”

“You made yourself a whore. You could have ended it all. We tried to help you.”

“You tried to put a bullet in my fucking head!”

“We knew we couldn’t save you. It was a mercy.”

“Mercy? Would you had done the same to your brother?”

He remained silent.

“Stop being an asshole, Davi.” Jaxon dashed back in front of me; I wondered if he worried about what his friend would do. Davi kept his hands in that pouch.

There was nothing to gain from coming here, and I didn’t want to linger any longer than I had to. Davi grabbed my arm when I tried to walk past him, and Jaxon pushed him away, knocking him against the wall.

“You’re my best friend, Davi. We’ve been through a lot together, but you’re going too far! Don’t think for a moment I won’t crush your head like a twig if you hurt him.”

This was getting out of control. Davi reached in the pocket again.

“Fine! You want that rune; I will get it for you. But I need something out of this.” Now my hands trembled, but I hoped I looked the part of a confident, controlled person. “I need help finding my dad.”

“Then we’ll make it an equal exchange. We find your pops and you hand over the rune.”

“If I return, I might not leave again, at least not when I want to. However, if I can get Jaxon recruited, then he can act as a liaison. Our dive team is on the upper third level. That’s where Jaxon will stay for the job once he’s hired. This is the only in you will ever get.”

He thought about it for a long while, and now he removed his empty hands from the pouch. “Jaxon, let’s talk alone, yeah.”

They went off to the back rooms, and I tiptoed to the door, but a small glint of light reflecting off the shack across the road stopped me, and it occurred to me that so far, I’ve never seen this Davi without Melanie. My body froze, and I glanced out the window like a fool before backing away. I couldn’t hear what thetwo were discussing, though it wasn’t rocket science to figure out.

When they returned, Davi looked at the collar. “Would you mind us placing a mic on it?”

“Hell no! If he finds out—”

“Do you have any idea how valuable the info we can get from a titan household? You can make your death mean something rather than die like the rest of the sheep.”

“Shut up, Davi, he doesn’t need this right now.” Jaxon intervened.

“He doesn’t need your dick either, but that won’t stop you from trying to give it to him.” He rolled his eyes. “With the mic, you wouldn’t have to leave the titan’s side. Once we find out where your pops is, we can just tell you.”

I walked past, not taking the damn thing. “No, that’s far too risky for me. Just give the info to Jaxon. Like I said, I won’t give you anything else without getting something in return.” I looked to Jaxon and whispered the passcode of our dive team. “Meet up with a dark-skinned guy named Dean; they’re staying in a hotel called The Saints.”

He nodded and let me go, and seeing this as my only chance to leave, I took it. The rumbling thunder was like a roar inside my heart, the skies cracked open, and a gush of rain soaked the streets again. Dammit, my clothes were going to get wet again.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

THORSTEN

I waited for him by the apartment’s entrance, my legs crossed in the chair facing the door like a disapproving parent catching their child sneaking out. I was weak and sleepy and would love nothing more than to be in bed with my mate right now. I never should have told him not to come with me, but I didn’t think I would make good company for the night.

When I overheard Hannah inform Gio of Kal’s disappearance, I got out of bed and checked the keypad lock. One mistake, just one, and he took advantage of it. But there was no need to dispatch the dogs known as the Suits to hunt him down. I knew where he had gone and why, and I also knew he was on his way back to me of his own free will.
