He entered quietly, and the moment he saw me, he knew there was no point in protesting.

“Sorry.”

I was in his face before he could utter another word. “You fool! Do you have any idea how many saw you leave? Anything could have happened.”

“I needed to recruit Jaxon. I trust him.”

“You must truly think me a fool?”

I spoke a code in my language and winced at the fear in his wide green eye as he gasped and held the collar, trying his best to pry it free. Instead of the needle, a voice came from the collar, his voice, and the other dwarves in the room. “Now you know the other use for the collar. I know your wannabe lover and his merry band of freedom fighters are trying to steal the rune from me. They aren’t the first to try.”

He sighed as relief settled on his beautiful features. “If you were listening, then you would know I didn’t say where it could be. I think one of them had a gun and was prepared to kill Jaxon and myself to tie up loose ends. I had to pretend I was on their side.”

Such a perfect liar, such an excellent manipulator for one who claims he cannot do it. “You need to stop playing games right now. You are treading on thin ice.”

“Okay, you heard everything. Then you know that I can’t fully trust my team, and there is already bad blood brewing with Lala’s death. You may not trust Jaxon, but I do. I know him more than anyone on my team. So yeah, I recruited him behind your back because you don’t trust my judgement. I don’t care about any resistance!”

“What am I supposed to make of this, little one?” I muttered to myself.

“I know it sounds bad, but if I was on their side I could have told them that the rune they are after is a fake and that we are diving for the real one.” He approached me cautiously, placing his small hands on my chest.

“Don’t pretend you did any of this for my sake.”

“Fine, I didn’t leave for your sake--”

“I understand you wish to return to your lover.” Jealousy now guided my words. I should have known this would end terribly between us. We were two different.

“Jaxon is my friend, not my lover.”

“Stop playing the fool. You know what he wants.”

“I do know, but instead of focusing on what he wants, why not focus on whatIwant? I want you to trust me. But you don’t, which is why you didn’t tell me where my father is and why you didn’t remove this collar.”

I grabbed him, lifting him up and carrying him up the stairs to my bed. He pressed his lips against mine in a way I’ve never experienced before, his kisses were fierce and desperate, against my languid yet dynamic moves. I bit into his neck, sucking at his skin, before littering his body with bruising kisses.

“You are mine.” I whispered as I entered him, the words repeated until I couldn’t remember if it were me or him who spoke the words.

Shame was all I felt right now. My mate rested against my chest as usual. His breathing slowed, a clear sign he was asleep. I allowed myself to get carried away by base emotions and fear. He doesn’t know that there is no poison needle in his collar, it’s merely a tracking and listening device. He doesn’t know that the reason it’s better not to tell him his father’s location is because my enemies will use it against me. Of course he would be afraid and doubtful of my feelings for him. I caused this desperation in him. And I had the nerve to accuse him of leaving me when running away would be the wiser thing to do.

I squeezed my brow and grimaced. I would need my meals brought up today and I surely couldn’t call for a dive, especially since the storm wasn’t letting up soon. The waters would be too much for the dwarves to handle, even with equipment.

The room was still dark from the lack of sun, although it was the morning and I felt him stir awake and sit up. I wonder how long he had been awake. He didn’t look at me, but I noticed his creamy skin was red. Last night his body was on fire and he didn’t look well at all. “I’m sorry,” I said, feeling like shit. “You’re suffering because of me.”

“It’s a virus that’s making me suffer, not you.” He replied. “I wanted to be with you.”

“You’re not diving in this condition.” Before he protested, I covered his lips with my finger. “No. You messed up down there because you couldn’t do it. I won’t let you go. You can monitor the dive from the ship.”

“Thorsten.” He sighed and leaned against me. Something was nagging him, and I was a part of it. I wanted to alleviate his fears.

“About your father.” I brushed my hand over his warm cheek. “He’s here.”

“He’s here?”

“Yes, He’s in a level one hospital under an alias. He knows you’re alive and doing well. I understand if you don’t believe me.”

“I do. I just want to speak to him and let him know I’m okay with my own words.”

“You will. When this is over. I promise.”
