“I don’t know what to say.”

“Say nothing.”

I picked up the paper that slipped from his pocket containing the map to this desert place far away from the gloomy skies of this region. Africa, never heard of the place and from here it was a long journey across the sea to reach it. They say the air andwater are clean and what a sight. Titans and dwarves working together to build their community. It also didn’t look like our arrival had destroyed it. Why did the council tell us we destroyed the entire realm?

“Do you think a place like this truly exists?” He asked.

“I don’t know. It looks nice…”

“Would you rather live here?”

“Going home is important to you, you’ve wanted to do it for a long time.”

“I know, but perhaps your beliefs are rubbing off on me. The power behind creating your own destiny and all that.”

“Oh?”

“It was fate that guided me here, and perhaps has kept me here to find you. However, I volunteered to lead this project, I oversaw the creation of the portal and its station, and I learned runesmithing to create a shield. I did this of my own will.” I kissed his smooth hand. “Perhaps with my will I can create a world where we can go anywhere we wish. We don’t have to be beholden to one realm over the other.”

“You think that’s possible?” He almost whispered.

I nodded. I didn’t want to tell him what I would have to do to make that a reality, and for that wish to come true it would mean destroying those who challenged the very existence of the portal, men like Felman.

I cupped his face and chastely kissed him on the lips. “I love you. You do not understand how terrible it is to admit this.”

He looked at me, his expression softening before he turned away from me again. “I love you too.”

“Then will you trust me without knowing why?”

He nodded.

“I’ll hire your friend. I don’t like him, but he will protect you. But if he tries anything with you or the rune, I will kill him.”

“I understand.”

“Give me time to recover.” I said, pulling the covers over my head. It felt like my body was made of lead. “I’ll run everything by Gio later. And I also want to spend more time with you, a whole day to ourselves.”

“Okay.” I could hear the smile in his voice but also the uncertainty. “What will we do, have dinner?”

“No, better, I’m taking you somewhere special tomorrow morning.”

I dressed in a garment I didn’t think I’d have to wear anytime soon. We preserved it for council meetings as a reminder of who we are or some nonsense. It was a long white tunic, which I tied with a crimson and gold sash around my waist.

And he looked ravishing in a similar colored tunic and loose pants I had just bought. I kept a blindfold around his eye and led him through the massive stone halls of the castle until we reached the place I wanted to show him. He gasped when I removed the wrappings.

Once we seated, I held his hand to let him know he was safe with me. “We call this room the memory sphere, it’s a place we can go if we’re feeling homesick. I never felt the need to come here. Why remember something if you plan to see it again? But I wanted to share this with you.”

I unlocked the holo through voice activation and watched as the room lit up in an array of vids of our world. A collection brought over and salvaged by our kind. Some were family gatherings in green lush sun-drenched fields. Hiking in the mountains and hunting in the thick dense woods.

“It’s so beautiful.”

“It’s my home.”

“It looks better than this place.” He smiled. “Everyone looks happy. I’m surprised to see beaches.”

I laughed. “We have more temperate areas at the southern axis, not far off from how your realm was before the calamity,” I ordered the holo to take us to a place of glowing orange and reddish skies. I paused it once we reached the city. “Like your realm before we arrived, we have countries and cities and towns. Different rulers and royal families and lords. This country is mine, Southern Esmia, and this is the city of Gel’Kardia.” I slowed the speed so we can move through the city, watching others of my kind live their daily lives. I turned on the audio to hear the sounds of the city.

He rested his head on my shoulder. “Thank you for showing me this.”
