“I wish I had vids of my castle.”

“How did you find that rune? Does your world have magic?”

“Only in the stones. One has to train for decades before they can harvest and shape them to unleash its power. Like the one you have is for protection. There’s another that creates a strange phenomenon that causes one to float, though briefly, and the tips of your toes can still touch the ground. These rune smiths can mix the properties of these runes and create new ones with new abilities. The traveler’s rune was forged entirely by accident. They are rare stones. One could dig for a lifetime and never find one. And we have a very long lifetime.”

“How long?”

“Millennia.”

“How old are you now?”

“Four hundred and fifty. I just received my own castle a month before departing for this place.”

“So, you’re like what, just reaching adulthood?”

“A hundred years ago.”

“I’ll be a wrinkled old man in thirty years.” He said dejectedly.

“And I would still love you.”

“Do you really believe I’m fated to be with you?” He looked at me, his brows brought together by pain. “It sounds like a cruel fate. When I die, then what will happen to you?”

“I haven’t thought of it. I can’t imagine I would want to go on without you. Perhaps that’s when I will end it.”

“You can’t do that!”

“Yes, I can,” I replied. “It’s not as if you would be here to stop me.”

“I don’t want that, you would still be so young and have so much of your life ahead of you. You could find love again, have children and everything. Don’t you dare even think of throwing all of that away for me. Promise me that no matter what, you will fight for life. Even if you think all is lost, choose life.”

I wanted to change the subject; I didn’t want to fight him when we should enjoy ourselves together. But he had a point; time would extinguish him in a few short decades. I didn’t think of this at all. “I promise…I will do whatever it takes so that our end isn’t a tragic one.” I hoped I could keep such a promise.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

KAL

We called in the crew for the early morning mission. This was it, no holding back or postponing another day no matter how either of us felt, though I believed Thorsten fully recovered, I didn’t know what he was thinking, but I prepared myself to follow him no matter where we may go.

And the thought of him wanting to die after me was not something I was happy with, but I understood the helplessness he felt at not having any control, and perhaps this was his way of getting it back. But we would have to cross these bridges once we crossed them. For now, the dive was my number one priority. I needed to push everything else aside or I would be a danger to my crew.

I still wasn’t feeling up to par, but I would do whatever it took to hold myself together to see that this mission was a success.

I brought food for the crew along with a few snacks to stave off my headache. It was still dark when we met at the docks, and this time Jaxon was among the faces of the group. I crossed my fingers hoping everything would work out, but I knew that even if it did, there would be a few bumps along the way. Especially with the way Jaxon and Thorsten were giving each other dirty looks.

“Thanks for coming,” I said to Jaxon as we boarded the large vessel.

“We’ll talk when we have time alone.”

“Sure.” I said, hoping that the wealth he made from this dive would be enough to temper the disappointment he would feel once he realized that Thorsten and I were leaving together.

I put down my gear and went to work checking the equipment we had onboard to make sure nothing was damaged or out of place. I went all out, making sure I took every precaution to ensure the safety of everyone during the mission.

“Everyone is here, so let’s head out,” Thorsten ordered the ship moving. “I see no point in giving you all a speech about how dangerous this job is, you already know. Just don’t get greedy, stay together and don’t break the tether.”

“I’ll supervise the dive from up here,” I added. “Before you head in, I want you all to report via radio.” Everyone agreed, but there was the other bit of change in the plan I needed to inform everyone about. “Also, I know we discussed removing Lala. However, I heard her tank hissing when I tried to move her so we’ve decided to leave her down there and perhaps retrieve her safely once the mission is complete.”

“You mean leave her ass in there.” Raze buckled his safety harness he would attach the tether to.
