CHAPTER THIRTY

THORSTEN

We left the station through the airlock, allowing the water to rush inside the station before sealing the door shut. We then opened the airlock leading to the tunnels. We equipped our tanks and prepared to make the climb to the top before I opened the airlock leading to the tunnels and submerging us once again. Without someone to operate the platform to lift us up, we had no other choice but to use the cables to climb. Which meant I wasn’t going to be in much shape to fight Gio. But I’ll be damned if I just lay down and die or watch my mate be killed. But to our surprise, the platform was gone, meaning there was a chance that nothing was waiting for us but the raging seas above.

“The platform is gone,” I said through the radio, feeling the heavy weight of sleep taking hold. But I had to keep myself going for Kal’s sake.

“Which means he took the fucking ship!” Dean scoffed. “What’s the plan?”

Kal gestured for us to ascend with one hand above our head, holding our low-pressure inflator at the highest possible pointso that we can dump air from our Buoyancy Control Device if necessary. We had gone over these drills before.

Dean reluctantly let go of his sack of goods.

Together we made our long and slow ascent.

I thought I what I will have to deal with once I made it to the surface. With Gio working for Felman, I won’t have a home to return to. I was returning to a whole new world.

“Jon let it go.” Kal finally spoke with a cough. His voice sounded weak. I should have waited until he was one hundred percent before doing this dive, but I stupidly thought he would be safe on the ship.

Jon was lagging until he released his sack while struggling and turning in the water.

When I reached the surface, Kal was waiting for me, then Dean and Jaxon.

“Jon?” Dean yelled and dove back under.

“We can’t wait for him. He knew to release that sack but didn’t,” I said.

“It will be a long swim back to the docks.” Kal warned.

“We’re not going to the third level docks,” I said.

Dean popped up with an unconscious Jon. “Fuck, I can’t do CPR out here.”

“I don’t give a damn,” I said, gripping Kal.

Jaxon was already swimming away.

“Dean. If you’re not confident in your skills to get him to shore, then you gotta drop him.” Kal said, his teeth now chattering.

“Goodbye, friend.” Dean whispered and released him. “Let’s hurry and go. I can’t take it.”

I directed them to where we should swim and somewhere along the way Jaxon must have joined us again. The docks that would take us to the third level were too far, but the docks at the lowest level of the city was manageable. My lids were heavy, Iwould pay dearly for this dive and I wouldn’t be strong enough to challenge anyone.

“Come on!” Kal yelled at me when he saw my state. His own skin turning a bluish tint.

We made it. After what seemed like forever, we were climbing to the filthy planks of wood these people called a dock and I fell to the ground, my vision blurry.

“We have to carry him,” Kal ordered in a panic…

A few hours later…

“More heat.” He said as warm air rushed across my body and the scent of pungent medicine wafted across my nose.

“Kal?” I reached up and touched his smooth cheeks before running my fingers along his scar. Dark circles hung under his eyes. His skin was as pale as mine, his lips still a light bluish tint.

“I guess, I have a lot of these now.” He lamented about the scar.

“Are you okay?”
