“Oh, hell no, so you can kill me with that thing!” The woman exclaimed, her accent wasn’t of the city, her words drawled.

“I won’t kill you.”

“So reassuring,” She mumbled cynically.

“Fine. But your boy toy stays with my girl. If you try anything, she won’t hesitate to blow his pretty little brains out.”

“That’s not needed,” Jaxon said, the fight out of him.

“Then this is perfect. Kal needs medical treatment.” I replied.

“I’m fine.”

“Your face is still bluish,” I said, feeling his cold cheeks. “You could have an infection or whatever it is you dwarves get.” I looked at the punk. “I want him taken to a specific hospital.”

“But…”

“No buts.” I said kissing him again. “I remember our promise.” I sat up, still in this dirty wetsuit, and wasn’t at all better. But for Kal and those of my kind who are still alive and counting on me, I had to be strong.

“Okay. Mel, take him to the location he says and stay there; I’ll call you if I need you.”

Kal wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me close, or more like guiding me close. “Be careful.”

“I will.”

“What does this rune do?” The punk the others called Davi asked. He twisted the barrier case, inspecting the rune inside.

“It belongs to another powerful person, and they will owe me and you a favor if I give it to them.” I took it from him and dared him to take issue.

The punk left, promising to gather far more of his group yet refused to tell me how many. The other woman aided Kal to another vehicle, I didn’t trust these people, but I knew that Jaxon at least cared enough about Kal to make sure he left safely. Jaxon remained in the house with me, as if he had something to say that couldn’t be said in front of the others, I had my own words for him as well.

“I’ll never understand what he sees in you and I’ll never accept it.” He spoke in a snide manner. “But I got no choice but to accept it because I can’t force Kal to want me. You see the way he looks, and he’s burning up with a fever.”

“I’m well aware of that.”

“Being with you is no good for him.”

“I’m well aware of that as well.” I said ready to go. “That’s why, the hospital you’ll be taking him to is the one I moved his father to. It’s another Sanctuary City called Rapture. There should be a guardian by his door, give him the passcode 7930. Tell him to supervise Kal’s treatment and spare no expense.Once he’s well enough to travel…take them to a ship waiting at the trade docks, it will take you to Sahara. Far away from me.”

With nothing left to say, he nodded and left me alone. I watched from the window as the car drove away, Kal’s eyes watching me as I watched him.

Somehow the city felt darker and colder now, I almost wanted to bundle up but I couldn’t give in to weakness now. The dwarf woman with the blond hair and beige freckled skin approached with Kal’s collar, it looked like she was trying to tinker with it.

“Let’s get this over with.” I said taking it from her and snapping it around her neck with the code in place. “Don’t worry, there is no needle.” I hated seeing it on another. We used her car to drive to the castle and once we arrived, I knew something was amiss. The grand lobby was vacant of both titans and dwarves. Usually the sign of a pending fight.

I grabbed the girl and ran for the staircase, instructing her on where to go and what to do, which she recorded it all. Once I got her safely inside and hidden, I spoke the words again, releasing the collar, and it was mine again.

“Holy shit! That was intense.” The woman exclaimed.

“Keep your voice down, they know you’re here.”

“Hey, don’t worry about me. My biggest hurdle was getting in here, now that I’m in, I won’t be detected.” She smirked confidently. “I’m gonna hack the living shit outta this place so if I was you, I wouldn’t linger.”

“I don’t plan on it.” I said, but really I had no plans to come out of this alive. The only thing I had planned was a backup to at least ensure that Kal made it out of this alive.

I left her on her own.

Whether the dwarves would be successful I didn’t know, nor did I count on it. I got their hacker in. If she was good then she could get the others in and I needed the distraction.
