“And let me tell you another thing,” she continues as she whirls around to him. “Just because I’m a female doesn’t mean that I don’t know what I’m talking about. I don’t know how it is in Urr’ki culture, but I can’t imagine it is all that different. Now get off those stairs. Come on. Now.”

“Niyah, please,” I say.

She glances over her shoulder. She narrows her eyebrows and squishes her face. It’s a pleading look. I understand she thinks she is helping. If only she will listen.

“We do not want him up there, remember?” she asks.

“Niyah, it’s okay. He is a friend. Well a friend of a friend. We can trust him to be quiet.”

“Huh?” she asks, taking a step back. She looks at him then at me. “You’re sure?”

I look at the boy. I do not know him personally but he’s being vouched for. I do know my friend and him I trust. I told him this was delicate. He wouldn’t send someone he couldn’t trust.

“Who do you work for?” I ask.

“Dosata, who think?” he asks growling.

“I think you will answer my questions,” I say, standing to my full height and squaring my shoulders.

He responds in kind, but almost immediately realizes he has nothing on me for size. He tries though.

“Go,” he huffs.

“What did Dosata tell you?”

His eyes narrow. “Deliver. Work. Quiet.”

“Quiet,” I say. “Tell me more.” Niyah watches the exchange but the boy’s lizard is not strong enough for this. I need more from him. “I’m going to question him in Urr’ki. Okay?”

“Yeah, go for it,” she says.

The young one looks around the room then shakes his head.

“Ask your questions,” he says.

“Would you commit treason?”

“Never,” he says, but there’s a hesitation before he speaks and something in his eyes. “What does it take to save the world?”

Now I’m staring at him not understanding. His frown deepens as his eyes narrow.

“What?”

“Never mind,” he says, looking past me. “Where do you want your delivery?”

“Did Dosata tell you to leave the cart?” I ask.

“What? No. I don’t come back with the cart he’ll have my hide.”

I rub the back of my head trying to think this through. Dosata knew, more or less what I needed, but he didn’t inform the delivery guy? This makes no sense. What am I missing?

“How long have you worked for him?”

“Long enough,” he says, acting sullen. “Can we get this over with now?”

“Were there any… special instructions?”

“I am nothing but a delivery person,” he answers.
