“I’m sure I will,” I say, my heart fluttering in my chest.

No one has given me a gift in years. What time have we had for such? But here, with all that we are facing and all that has happened, he got me one? Could I ask for a more thoughtful, kind mate?

“Open it,” he says, pushing it closer.

I choke down tears as I pull the box before myself then fumble to find the way it opens. The lid is tightly fit but lifts off and inside is the most beautiful, sparkling gem I have ever seen. I stare at it, watching the way it casts off the firelight breathless.

“Wow,” I exhale.

“You like?”

“Yes,” I whisper. “Wow.”

He rises from his seat and moves around the table to stand behind me. Reaching around he lifts the jewel out of the box and only now do I realize it’s a necklace. The stone is a rich, deep blue that twinkles as it spins on the finely crafted chain.

“The moment I saw it, I thought of you,” he says. “It sparkles like the stars in the sky and you, my dragoste, are my Star Person.”

He undoes the clasp and hooks the necklace around my neck. It hangs a little bit lower than I would prefer, but I love it. The stone rests at the top of my cleavage, sparkling brightly.

“It is gorgeous,” I say.

“It does not compare,” he says, whispering into my ear then butterfly kisses pass over my cheek.

He returns to his seat and I am nothing but smiles and joy.

“Thank you,” I say, feeling as if I’m choking on the words. “So much. Thank you.”

He smiles and raises his glass, taking a drink.

“Tajss provides,” he says.

“How did you have time for this? All that’s been going on, when could you possibly have pulled this off?”

“Truthfully it was an accident,” he says then tells me the story of how he came to purchase the necklace.

We share a laugh over parts of it but all it does is make my heart warmer. It seems as if, somehow, I love him even more. Something I never would have thought possible. It’s not that he bought me something, I’m no material girl, it’s the thoughtfulness of it. That’s what makes me choke up. In the middle of a crisis and his thoughts were still on doing something nice for me.

When he finishes the story I kiss him again as the best thank you I can possibly give but then the world is pressing in again. We have won the day, so to speak, but we’re nowhere near safe yet.

“What do we do now?” I ask, bringing us back to the topic at hand.

He stares at the case holding the mudrosti, thinking. He moves one hand to the back of his head and rubs, making his braids jangle.

“We must join the resistance,” he says. “The Shaman must be stopped.”

He looks up and fire burns in his eyes. A fire that ignites in my soul too.

“We have to save your people,” I say.

“Yes.”

This is it. I’m standing at a crossroads and if I want this relationship to be real, I have to put my trust in him. It must be right and real because right now I don’t feel afraid as I have any other time I thought about telling him.

“Bhoja,” I say. “There is something I need to tell you. Please, understand why I didn’t say this sooner.”

“What is it my dragoste?”

I swallow to try and force moisture into my too dry mouth. I squeeze his hand in mine then rush forward, spilling the truth. I tell him all of it. From my original volunteering to everything we were briefed on. I hold nothing back. He listens in absolute silence, saying nothing. When I finish we sit staring into each other’s eyes.
