„Destroy? Oh, give me a fucking break,” Stephanie says, rolling her eyes again.

„Couldn’t you celebrate at one of your friends’ places, maybe?” I dare to ask. „I mean, if it’s not too much of a hassle…”

Stephanie glares at me, as if she was hoping to set me on fire just by staring.

„I knew it,” she hisses. „You two boring geeks always stick together! I never get to do anything fun, just because you guys are such fucking losers.”

„A loser who will one day employ people like you, who spent their entire time at college just getting drunk and partying,” Colleen seethes.

„Colleen…” I say, raising my hands in an appeasing motion. I want to calm them down. „No reason to be mean.”

„Well, it’s true!” she exclaims.

„You just keep telling yourself that while you fall asleep on top of one of your books,” Stephanie barks at her. „I bet you’re not even going to winter formal next week!”

Colleen shrugs. „So what if we don’t?”

Stephanie huffs angrily, and her eyes flit back and forth between Colleen and me, before she spins on her heels, jumps into her boots, and grabs her coat.

„I fucking hate you,” she hisses, before she runs out of the house, slamming the door in her usual dramatic fashion.

Colleen lets out a long and exasperated sigh. „Fuck, she gets on my nerves. Why did I have to end up with such an idiot roommate?”

„Well, um, I can kind of see where she’s coming fr—”

„Oh, Jesus fucking Christ, will you stop it? She’s not here anymore, you don’t have to brown nose your way into her heart.”

„I’m just saying, maybe we should try to at least be…nice to each other?” I suggest.

She smiles at me, and leans her head to the side, as if she’s pitying me. „You’re so cute, Claire, you know that? Sometimes, people just don’t get along, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

„I guess so,” I say as I walk over to the kitchen.

„Are you going to winter formal?” Colleen asks, following me into the kitchen.

„I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it,” I say truthfully. I’m not good with parties or dances in general, and never even thought about attending something like the winter formal when I first started at Harvard. But I heard something about this event recently that may change my mind.

„Our professors will be there, too, right?” I ask, trying to seem very nonchalant about it.

„Some of them, yeah,” Colleen says. „I bet Stephanie is counting on that.”

She releases a sinister giggle, and I throw her a confused look. „Why’s that?”

„Okay, don’t tell anybody, but I heard that she’s hooking up with one of the professors, someone from our department, actually.”

My heart sinks, and my voice almost breaks when I ask, „Who?”

„Honestly, no idea, I just heard it from a friend who heard from a friend who met her at a party,” she replies. „Apparently she was drunk and bragging about it. Can you imagine? How stupid!”

„Um, yeah,” I agree.

„I mean, she could get kicked out if it’s true!” Colleen goes on. „Especially if she keeps bragging about it like that, what an idiot.”

There’s a lump in my throat that prevents me from saying anything else, and I almost sigh with relief when Colleen goes away, shaking her head about the foolishness of our roommate.
