Joel whipped out his phone, both of us impatient as he dialed Isaias. The Beta sunk his fingers into my hair as I wrapped my arms around his stomach, giggling when Isaias answered. His voice was tired and agitated but it was oh so deliciously the Alpha I had fallen in love with.

“Hi Alpha! Happy Valentine’s Day.” I beamed, grinning from ear to ear when my enthusiasm drew a chuckle from him.

“Right back at you. Didn’t think you’d be up this early. How’s the studying going?”

The bond resonated with his desire to get back to us. “All good in the hood.” My nose scrunched up at the terrible wording before I shook it off. “The babies are so cute and Kieran was singing to them this morning. Xylo checked on us too.” The words poured from my lips as anxiety took hold of me.

Even though Isaias had tried to shield Kieran and I from it, both of us knew that there was more to the incident from last year. The problem was knowing how deep it ran. For that reason only, I was glad Isaias hadn’t given Kieran his bite before he left. The tendrils of pure, unbridled rage coming from Isaias wasn’t something I wanted Kieran to deal with right now.

Joel ran his nose along my temple, “Xylo didn’t find anything out of the ordinary but Kieran wasn’t too keen on having him at the door.” That was an understatement.

“I’m not surprised. I’m almost home, though.”

I nodded, curling into Joel’s side a little tighter. “I know.”

“Tell me what’s going through that head of yours, Ren. I can practically hear you thinking from here.”

I sucked in my bottom lip between my teeth, chewing it for several seconds before answering. “Something’s wrong.”

“Elaborate.”Isaias’ voice hardened in a way that sent shivers down my spine. I sat up straight and cradled the phone in my hands, wanting to please my Alpha and submit to him at the same time. I twisted up to see Joel’s expression, wondering if this was the right time to say anything. Maybe I should wait until Isaias was home but it was a lingering worry that needed to be addressed.

“Kieran almost passed out two nights ago. It’s not stress. It’s something else and he’s having nightmares. Daydreams? I think these are new ones. Maybe older ones.” Tears gathered in my eyes remembering how Kieran had retreated into the hall with our babies like someone was going to steal them from him. Had he been thinking, he would have been able to smell that Xylo was at the door, a Beta we all knew and trusted. However, Kieran had been reacting first and thinking second, eyes shifting around the house when he thought we weren’t looking.

I would have understood if he was antsy or terrified but he was just on guard. All the time. It hurt that he felt he wasn’t safe, that our babies weren’t safe here. The bond tightened and then softened, Isaias weathering his emotions. I wasn’t sure why we could feel the bond so much clearer now. It was as if Kieran’s presence strengthened it in a way that wasn’t possible. I wasn’t complaining but it was a little… odd.

Swallowing, I added the last bit of my worries. “His scent has spiked a few times when you were gone. We thought it might be his heat but…”

“Where’s Dr. Ashford?”

“On his way.” As if I summoned him, a knock came at the door and Joel left my side to answer it. “Kieran doesn’t seem to like the new scents in the house either. Like when we come from outside.” Isaias already knew that but I couldn’t help telling him again. Most Omegas were territorial around their packs and children especially when it was new. However, Kieran acted almost like it was an affront to his very being that we smelled like anything other than us… or him.

It was common when I returned from classes that he’d drag me into the shower or the nest and smother me. Again, I wasnotcomplaining but it also meant that something was wrong, right?

I watched as Joel walked Dr. Ashford to the nest, both of them speaking in hushed tones. They were gone for several minutes before returning to the living room, Isaias still on the other side of the phone as if he knew what was going on. Joel saddled up against my side as Dr. Ashford took a seat across from us. His eyes dipped to the phone, a small smile tugging at his lips.

“I presume Isaias is on the other side of that?”

I nodded and Isaias hummed his answer through the speaker.

“Well, then that makes things easier having you all here. Your Omega and your babies are healthy, physically. As for mentally, I can’t tell you how much time it’s going to take for Kieran to return to the man he was. He’s been through a lot. Male pregnancies can also be a huge ordeal for Omegas of his biological makeup. Add in the other incidents you have mentioned, Kieran is warring with his emotions the best way he knows how.”

I didn’t like that at all. Knowing that Kieran was suffering but we were just supposed to… let it take its toll? Watching our Omega sufferinghurt.

The doctor continued as I fisted my hands at my side, my body stiffening. “I’ll leave you with an extra dose of blockers as Joel mentioned his heat has been creeping back up. Most Omegasexperience a heat anywhere from 4-6 months after pregnancy but this prescription should stave that off for up to three months should you need it. However, if his heat pushes through, you should let it happen. I would refrain from bringing too many scents into the house during this time as well.”

“This is his safe space,” Isaias responded and I quickly agreed. Kieran hadn’t really left since we moved.

Dr. Ashford nodded, “Yes, but there’s one more thing. You need to give him something to do.”

“What?” I blurted out.

“Omegas thrive when they are allowed to tinker, explore, ask questions. From what you’ve told me, he’s always chosen a job that suited his current lifestyle but he’s never chosen something for himself. He has his babies, yes, but the worst thing you can do is have an Omega that curls into himself. When that happens, it’s nearly impossible to open them back up.”

It weirded me out how he was speaking about Kieran so clinically but I dismissed it. We said our goodbyes as Dr. Ashford left a prescription on the counter, Isaias waiting until the front door closed to say anything. “What are you thinking, Ren?”

“I just… he’s not sleeping, Isaias.”

While Kieran was suffering, I had been tucked into a chest, drooling the night away. Without Isaias here, it was like I was seeing a completely different picture and I hated it.
