I’ve driven so much that I’m turned around and honestly have no idea where I am. I know I’m in town, but I’m not really in a part of town I want to be in. This is the second that my old truck shudders and my check engine light comes on. Of course. I press on, trying to make it a little farther, but smoke curls up from under the hood and I pull over. The streets are lined with meters, so I dig through my cup holder for change and put it in the meter. I could lift the hood and start poking around, but I don’t. Looking up at the buildings, I can hear construction, and see a few people walking by. I know I’m not too far from the cute little shops and bistros on the other side of the rundown area. So, I get out, lock the truck. I have two hours to walk, clear my head, and come back to call Dax for help. He’ll come, we’ll talk it out, and everything will be fine.

I leave my smoking truck behind, look up to see where I’m going, and start walking. I take in the fresh air. Calming breaths and happy thoughts accompany me while I let my anger go. The more I think, the more I realize it’s not her touching him that makes me mad, it’s him not stopping her. We’re definitely having a long talk when I get back. My path is detoured past a construction site and I watch the crane lift a beam, hand shielding my eyes from the sun. I pull my hair up in a messy bun, letting the sun warm my neck, and keep walking around the site. A wolf whistle rings out and I keep walking. Some shouting follows and I turn to see the biggest man I’ve ever seen yelling at a man in a hard hat. The man in the hat throws his hand up and beckons me to him. I point to myself and he nods. I shrug and walk his direction, meeting him and the huge guy at the fence. I thought Dax was massive, but this guy looks like a tank on legs. His appearance tickles something in the back of my brain, but I focus on the guy who called for me. When I meet his eyes, he looks familiar too.

“I’m sorry for whistling Miss. That was rude.” The smaller man tips his head at me and I smile.

“Apology accepted.” I turn to leave, but the big man speaks.

“Do I know you?” He takes out a bandana and wipes his face. Then his eyebrows raise to his hairline. “You’re Dax’s woman!” He smiles like he won an award.

“I have a name.” I cross my arms over my chest, glaring.

He laughs. “Man, your glare is just as good as Morgan’s.” He extends his hand. “Everett. I was there the night he rescued you from O’Malley’s.”

“Dax didn’t rescue me,” I grumble.

“You still drinking alone at bars?” Everett gives me a look. I shake my head. “Right. Where is he? Haven’t heard from him in more than a week.” Everett looks around like Dax is going to hide his six foot tall frame behind my five-five.

“Working,” I answer.

“What are you doing on this side of town?” He leans on the fence.

“Clearing my head,” I answer truthfully. “We had a disagreement.” I don’t know why I tell Everett this, but it falls out.

“He let you leave mad? That doesn’t sound like Dax.”

“I just left. It’s complicated.” I shrug. “It was good to see you, but I’m going to walk this out then go home with a clear head.” I already feel better.

“Be safe.” Everett winks and tips his head at me before he turns away. I wave and start to leave, but Everett’s voice comes from behind me and I turn. “Go easy on him. He’s a good guy.”

“I will.” I call back to him, then I keep walking. Talking to Everett helped more than the drive and the walk.

It only takes me another few minutes to get to civilization and I spend hours walking in and out of shops. I browse shelves, talk to shop owners, and wander aimlessly until the sun starts to set. I think about wandering until it’s dark, but we still need to get my truck home.Ineed to go home. I start back toward the truck, ready to suck it all up and call Dax. I pass the empty construction site, slowly making it back to my truck where I know the meter has run out, and I probably have a ticket waiting. Instead of a ticket, I find another surprise waiting for me.

I walk up to the truck and stand in front of him. He’s kicked back, long legs in front of him, arms crossed, leaning on the passenger door.

“Dax.” I say his name and he looks up. The relief that washes over his face is like a slap to the face. I expected anger, not the fear I see drain away.

“Fuck, Joss, don’t ever do that to me again.” He pushes off the door and I throw my arms around his neck when he wraps me into his chest. He kisses my head and I breathe him in. I was only gone for a few hours, but it felt like an eternity now that I’m back in his arms.

Chapter Ten

Dax

Idrove for hours before Everett called me to tell me he saw Joslyn and she’s okay. I tried to play it off like I knew she was walking around the shitty part of town alone, but he reminded me that Morgan was mugged not far from there and I’ve never driven so fast in my life. I paced roads, alleyways, and when I was sure she wasn’t dead somewhere, I went back to her truck and waited. She had until the sun went down over the skyline before I really went looking for her. Right before I had my whole crew scouring the city, she appeared in front of me and I nearly fell to my knees. I didn’t relax until she was in my arms. I know how stupid I acted, and I’d never look at another woman again, but not reacting differently almost lost me the best thing in my life.

“I love you so much.” The words are muffled against my chest, but I hear them loud and clear.

“I love you too.” I say it into her hair.

“Next time another woman hits on you, I’m breaking her face. And if you allow it, you can sleep on the couch.” Joslyn grumbles and I can’t help but laugh.

“It’s sexy when you get mad.” I pull back from her and tip her head up to kiss her. She kisses me back, my tongue sweeps into her mouth and she sighs. My cock is hard instantly and all I want is to take her home and show her exactly how much I love her. I grab her ass and lift her up, her legs wrap around my waist and I turn her to press her against the truck. Her mouth never leaves mine.

“I’m still mad.” She gasps when I kiss down her throat, lowering her from my hip just enough to grind against her pussy.

“Good. You can take it out on me later.” I nip her earlobe and try to rein it in before I’m slapped with an indecent exposure charge. I kiss her again softly, letting her down. “Get your stuff and let’s go. We can get the truck tomorrow.” I step back, adjusting my cock in my jeans to let her get in her truck.

“How’d you know something was wrong with it?” She reluctantly steps back from me to unlock the cab and open the door.
