“Sam is short for Samantha.”

“Oh. Did she tell you they’re dating?”

“Nope, but let’s say that they appeared quite cozy in the pep section at the game.”

“Is that why she’s been so secretive?”

“Maybe.”

“Should I talk to her about it?”

“No. She’ll talk to you when she’s ready.”

“I take it she’s talked to you about it, then?”

“A little.”

Nav and Keisha enter the room and, judging from the hard expressions on their faces, the party is over.

Immediately I snap into mom mode. “What’s wrong?” I glance between Nav and my youngest daughter and wonder if she overhead our conversation.

“We saw Dad.”

My good mood dies on the spot. The pit of my stomach does a roll, and the urge to vomit consumes me. “Where?”

“The donut place at MacCorkle Avenue. Was walking out as we were going inside,” Nav explains.

I let out a huff. “Did he say anything?”

“He didn’t recognize me.” Kiesha cries and my heart aches for her.

“Come here.” I open my arms to my girl, forgetting all about Prodigy and our plans for tonight.

“We didn’t get any donuts,” she mumbles into my neck and breaks into another sob.

I glance at the rest of our group and shoo them away.

Pam gives me a pointed look and does the thumb and pinky out hand gesture to call her later.

Kimber and Nav migrate to the living room but don’t leave.

“Tell you what. Why don’t you do me a huge favor and set out all the ingredients for waffles while I take a quick shower? I think there’s still some cool whip in the fridge that’s good.”

“Okay.” She sniffs, then unlatches her arms from my neck.

“Ask your sister to help. I’ll be out of the shower in a jiffy.”

Kiesha nods and moves off.

Fucking Adam. At least it wasn’t me seeing him for once, and Nav witnessed his being in town. I don’t keep tabs on my ex, but I appreciate that I wasn’t crazy and that he’s been hanging around.

That man has the absolute worst timing. I’ve never hated anyone more in my life.

I push thoughts of the vile man to the back of my mind and hope that Kiesha soon forgets he ever existed.

In the bathroom, I turn the faucet in the shower on as hot as it will go. I’d really fancy a relaxing bubble bath. There’s not enough time. I need to check in on the new hire today, too.

I would ask Pam, only one stipulation of our partnership is that she gets her weekends with her family. Louella is working with her but it’s my responsibility to ensure my business is running smoothly and see to it that new hires settle in.
