I bite my tongue and let them talk it out.
“Because I was excited for you. Crazy pants. Ugh. Can you drop me at home on your way to work?”
“Sure.”
“You’re working today?”
“I’m only planning on swinging by for an hour or two. Why?”
“You promised to take me shopping for homecoming.”
“Mom has another date with Prodigy tonight. I can take you if you cut your shit out.”
“No way. Mom promised.”
“I can reschedule. It’s not a big deal.”
Kimber rolls her eyes and glares at Kiesha. “It is a big deal. Mom needs this.”
“It’s fine. Stop arguing. I can see him tomorrow or something.” It’s tradition with my girls to make a day of it when I take them dress shopping. New dress, shoes, accessories. Dinner and dessert at a favorite place. I spoil them. Even more now that I can afford to splurge a little.
“Whatever.” Kimber snorts. “I’ll be waiting in the car.”
Kiesha mocks her under her breath. I wait until Kimber dumps her plate in the sink and leaves out the back door before I start in with Kiesha.
“Your sister didn’t mean any harm, you know. You should be nicer to her. She loves you.”
“Loves to get on my nerves.”
“Hey. I get you’re upset about things with your dad.”
“He’s not my dad. I don’t have one. I never have.”
“You’re right, sweetheart. I know it isn’t fair. I wish I’d chosen better, but I didn’t. The best thing, though, is I got you and your sister out of that hell. You girls were my reward.”
“I hate him. I wish he would just go away and stay there.”
“I know you do.” I pull her in for a hug and kiss the top of her hair.
“Sorry for being a brat. I don’t want you to miss your date.”
“It’s okay. I made you a promise.”
“You can make it up to me. Kimber and I can go. Maybe I can ask Sam to tag along.”
“Are you sure?”
“You’re always putting everyone above yourself. Especially Kimber and me.”
“Hmm. Tell me about this Sam.”
“We’re only friends. They aren’t into me like that.”
“But you like them?”
“Maybe. I don’t know.”
“You can always talk to me.”
