“That was the feeling I got as well. When we were talking about the attack, I got the impression she was holding back and skipping over details.”

“Pam said the same. She’s known my sister for a long time and knows when she’s lying. Zoe’s a shit liar, but still. She’s full of it.”

I take another toke before passing the joint back. “What’s our play?”

“Let her think we believe her while doing whatever it takes to keep her safe.”

“Think she’d go for it if I wanted her and Kiesha to stay with me?”

“You’d have a better shot at sleeping on her couch.” He grins. “But I’d like to be a fly on the wall when you make that play.”

“Figured as much. I’m still gonna try.”

“Glad to hear. Exactly what she needs is someone who doesn’t shut down the minute things get tough.”

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m solid.”

My cell pings.

Nav: Doctor finally making his rounds. Should be released within the next hour.

Prodigy: On my way.

Shoving off my stool, I slap Link on the shoulder. “She’s being released.”

“Keep me posted.”

“Will do.”

On my way to Cabell, I get a text from Nav that they’ll meet me out front.

I pull up in my truck and do a quick run around the front to get to the passenger side before Nav can open the door for Zoe, earning me her gorgeous smile.

“We’ll see you at the house,” Zoe announces to her girls as she slides in.

I close the door and Kimber pauses at my side. “We’re only dropping in to pick up Kiesha’s stuff for school tomorrow.”

“Probably a good idea. Your mom needs her rest.”

“That goes for you too, big guy. No major physical activity for the next few days.”

“Noted. Ya’ll drive safe.” I can be creative and I have no problem doing all the work while my woman heals.

Back in the truck, I turn the volume on the stereo down, not wanting the noise to cause a headache. “Do you need to stop anywhere before I take you home?”

“No. I have painkillers at home if I need them.”

“Lunch?”

“They don’t want me eating or drinking too much. I just went grocery shopping so I should be good there. Thank you, though.”

“You know I’d prefer taking you home with me, but I understand you’ll be more comfortable at your place.”

“You’d be correct in your assumption.”

“Then I guess you won’t mind me staying at yours for the night.”

“The thought is sweet. I doubt I’ll be great company. My plans for the evening include a bubble bath and a long nap.”
