“That’ll be lunch.”

“I’ll meet you in the kitchen.”

“Can you get out of the tub on your own?”

“Ha. Wishful thinking. I’ve got it handled.”

I leave her to grab the delivery and tip the driver. I’d rather be getting into the tub with her, but I can be patient.

Zoe enters the kitchen a few minutes later as I’m plating the food. Dressed in nothing but a pink fluffy robe that I want nothing more than to peel from her body so I can devour her.

“Sit,” I demand, expecting her to argue. “Ordered cheddar broccoli or cheddar, bacon potato. Take your pick.”

“The cheddar broccoli, please.” She sits at the bar across from me.

I slide the bowl over and hand her a spoon.

“This is weird.”

“What?”

She takes a bite before answering. “Mmm. This is good. I’m not used to being served in my own kitchen.”

“Get used to it. Dr. Prodigy is on the job. What are you drinking? I’ve got Sprite or sweet tea.”

“Sprite.” She smiles at me. “Would you mind getting the oyster crackers from that cabinet? The third one over from the stove.”

I get her crackers and drink, then settle in with my bowl on the stool next to hers. “I’m not a big soup person, but this shit isn’t half bad.”

“Want to try mine?” She holds up a spoonful, angling it toward my mouth.

“I’d rather have you.”

“Incorrigible.”

“Only being honest.”

“Nothing wrong with that.”

“Speaking of honesty, Zoe. Why are you covering for him? Are you still fucking him?” I’m aware that can’t be it. She needs to come clean with it so I can protect her.

“What?” her spoon clatters against the bowl, flinging bits of broccoli and cracker onto the counter.

I wasn’t planning on calling her out on her shit, but it’s eating at me. I have to figure out what the deal is. He made her miserable. She’s said it herself that the guy is a piece of shit. “I don’t get it.”

“I really don’t want to fight about Adam.”

“You think I do? I’d love to take you to your bed and go down on you for dessert. But I need to know what the play is here.”

“This right here is exactly why I keep my mouth shut. I’m not playing games with you. I’m trying to keep my girls safe.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“Please don’t. My head hurts and I need a nap. Maybe it’d be best if you go. Quit while we’re ahead. We had a good time the other night. Let’s leave it at that.”

“Nah, sweetheart. You’re not pulling that card with me. Did he threaten the girls?”

“Only me, okay. You don’t grasp the severity of what it’s like. If I bring him up, I want attention. I don’t bring him up and you accuse me of fucking him. I can’t win. He always comes out like a rose and I’m the one left in his mess. He’s got another woman and child. I don’t know how to inform my girls that he has another kid. I don’t know how to tell the woman who came to me for a job that the father of her daughter is my piece of shit ex. And the cherry on top of that shit cake is he got to me. The worst part is he made you doubt me. Which is why I’ve kept my mouth shut.”
