I move in a flash to close my robe, kneeing Eric in the nose in the process.

“Fuck,” He pinches his nose falling back on his ass.

My stepmother enters the kitchen, taking in the scene. “Did I come at a bad time?” Her lips pull into a tight O as she observes Prodigy sitting on his ass dripping blood onto my white tile floors. “Lean your head forward, not back.”

“Now isn’t exactly a great time, Nini.”

“I would have called, but I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d check in on you and Kiesha. Where is my darling girl?” Her three-inch heels clack across my floor as the overbearing scent of her floral perfume permeates the air. She’s dressed to the nines in her Sunday best, likely on the prowl for her latest victim. I’ll give her credit where it’s due. For her age, she looks great.

I roll my eyes as I tear some paper towels off the dispenser. She rarely stops by. Not only that, but my father also divorced her a good fifteen years ago, before he retired to Florida. She doesn’t impose herself on my brother and his family because she knows he won’t tolerate her meddling and nosing. There’s only room for one of those in his house and that’s Pam. You could say the men in my family have a type. Pam I like. Nini is something else.

“He’s cute. I’m sure once you clean all that blood off his face. What’d I interrupt?”

“Nothing. We were having lunch.”

“Or more like he was about to. Did you start your period or something while he was going down?” she whispers with a hand blocking her mouth, as if he can’t hear her as she towers over him.

“Oh, my God. Just stop talking.”

“You shouldn’t be so rude to me. Your new man here might mistake you for a bitch.”

“Don’t talk to her like that.” Prodigy shoves up with one hand while pinching his nose with the other.

“I like the attitude on him.” She eyes him up and down. “Friend of your brother’s, no doubt.”

“Why are you here?”

“Kiesha sent me a text and told me about your troubles. I thought I’d do the motherly thing and see if you need anything, but I can see you’ve got this hunk here to see to that.”

“Thank you for stopping by. I’ll call you later this week and we can do lunch. I was about to take a much needed nap.”

“Is that what you call it now days? Fine, dear. I’ll see you later this week.” She moves in to air kiss my cheeks. “It was nice to meet you…”

“Eric,” he fills in for her.

“I’m sure I’ll be seeing more of you.”

“You can count on that.”

“Good. My Zoe needs a man in her life.”

Her Zoe. I snort. Nini was a total twat when married to my father. She didn’t come around until my dad left her and she realized that his family was all she had. Now I guess the girls and I have kind of adopted her into our fold. Because of her persistence more than our love of her. Guess she’s grown on me.

She struts back out the way she entered.

Once I hear the door close, I rush to lock it.

“I’m sorry about all of that. Are you okay?”

Prodigy’s nose appears to have stopped bleeding.

“I don’t think it’s broken, but even if it were, seeing you spread and ready for me like that. Totally worth it.”

“Do you need ice?”

“I’ll live.”

“I feel awful.”
