“Why didn’t you say something?”

“I wasn’t sure how much you had worked out, but I guess I was waiting for you to confide in me or show your intentions.”

“Are you going to fire me? I really need this job. I tried to leave, and I did, but he found me.”

“I don’t want to fire you. I’d like to help you if you truly want him out of your life. Did he do that to your face?”

“He showed up at the house I’m staying at. He tapped on my window after I’d gotten Kieleigh to sleep. Claimed he had some money to help out with her school clothes that she’s going to need. I told him I had a job and that the best way to help our daughter was to get himself clean. He didn’t take too kindly to the suggestion.”

“I can see that. Not surprising though. He’s had a problem for a long time. Nearly twenty years.”

“He told me that you cheated on him and took his kids. That you drove him to drink. It was his way of coping with not having a relationship with his girls. Deep down, part of me always recognized that was a lie. I had my own demons, ya know. So I didn’t judge. I mean, we met at a homeless shelter. We were only friends at first. We’d use dope together. Sleep together. Then I got pregnant, and I tried to get my shit together. For a while he did too.”

“I’m sorry you’ve been through what sounds like some really rough times. I respect that you’re trying to give your little girl a better life. As far as Adam and our marriage.” I snort. “I have no doubt he told you nothing but lies. He lost his right to see our kids because he couldn’t pass a drug screening or hold down a job. I never cheated on him. That was him. I spent a lot of wasted time blaming myself. I hope you don’t make that same mistake. Because life gets better.”

Charlsie taps on the door, holding Jackson on her hip. “Not to interrupt, but I could really use a hand out here.”

“I’ll be right there,” I relay. I look back at a tearful Marie. “Go freshen up. We’ll talk more later and see about finding you a safer place to stay where Adam can’t get to you.”

“How’s your day been, beautiful?” Prodigy kisses me on the cheek. Dang, my man is hot. Dressed in his denim and leather.

“Long and it’s only noon.”

“You ready to get some lunch?”

“I feel like I should stick around. I had a chat with Marie. She knows I know about Adam. He showed up where she’s staying and took his fists to her face. I’ve gotta do something. I thought about inviting her and her little girl to stay with Kiesha and me. I only worry that he’ll come to the house.”

“I may have a place. Let me make a call and I’ll pick up lunch and bring it back. Ask Marie and that other chick what they want and text me your orders.”

“Whatever I did to deserve you, I’ll never know.”

“I ask myself the same thing.” He comes in for a quick peck that soon turns deeper and rougher. His hands roam my hips and backside as our tongues connect.

I’m glad I closed the door and blinds when he got here. The last thing I need is a group of toddlers seeing him feeling me up.

“Fuck. You don’t know how bad I want to bend you over your desk right now.”

“Don’t tell me that.”

“I better go make that call. Text me what you want.”

“I don’t think they serve your cock on the menu.”

“They do at my private café.” He grins. “See you soon.” He kisses me again.

“Go.” Smooch. “Get out of here.” Kiss.

“Sorry. Can’t seem to keep my hands off you.”

“You won’t hear me complaining.” My stomach grumbles to argue.

He pulls out his phone as he goes out the door.

“Prez. I hate to ask, but I need a favor. It’s important.” He pauses and shoots me a grin. “Be there in fifteen.”

Chapter Fourteen

When I get to the clubhouse, Link is behind the bar, filling in for Dipshit Jimmy. I signal for him to follow me to Prez’s office. He should be in on this, too.
