I do a walk through the house, checking every closet and room one by one.

Nothing appears any different than it did this morning.

I head back out to the truck and give her the all clear.

Then I watch her walk inside, wondering where shit went sideways.

Chapter Fifteen

Watching Prodigy drive away, I know I’ve really fucked up this time and yet I’m powerless to stop this collision course. Maybe things were going too smooth. Life loves to fuck me. I don’t even understand what set him off. What I do know is what I’m not going to do is blame myself.

I simply meant that I don’t expect him to be at my beck and call, but it came out wrong and snippy. We’re both on edge and have had a long weekend. One that would have been perfect had Adam not shown back up in my life. Now once again I’m cleaning up another mess, he’s made and suffering the consequences.

I’m mentally and physically exhausted. The last thing I want to do is cook. Maybe Kiesha won’t mind doing something simple, like pizza delivery. I probably shouldn’t be drinking since I have a concussion, but I need a glass of wine.

Kiesha barges in as I’m mid pour with one of the prospects from the club trailing her. “Dude. I’m home. You see my mom. You can leave.”

“I’ve got my orders.”

“He’s got his orders.” She throws a hand out. “Why do I need some biker following me around school like a body guard stalker? Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was to explain to my friends? And then Jonesy Ripley came up to me at my locker and I thought he was going to ask me to homecoming. Then this jerk struts up behind me, leans in and grabs my books to carry them, so Jonesy walked off without asking. He thinks I have a boyfriend now. My social life is over. Ruined.”

I purse my lips, trying not to laugh because I see for Kiesha it isn’t remotely funny.

Jimmy shrugs. “I was told to pretend I was her boyfriend and blend in. My girlfriend won’t be happy about it either.”

“Great. Not only do I have to lose out on the hottest guy in school. I mean, he has these abs that I just want to lick. Now I’ve gotta worry about biker boy’s girl trying to kill me for fake stealing her man.”

“Kiesha,” I snap. “The last thing a mother wants to hear is her teenage daughter drooling about licking some douche football player’s abs.”

“He’s not a douche.”

“I shouldn’t be sharing this and you best not repeat it, but he has a baby. You know how I know? Because his son is in my daycare while his teen mom works at a fast-food joint. And Jonesy, with the lickable abs, doesn’t lift a finger. Because he’s going to college on a football scholarship, and he doesn’t have time for a job or a kid.”

“Is that true?” Kiesha stares at me.

I down my wine and pour another glass. “Yeah, honey it is.”

“That jerk.”

“Told you.”

“Ugh. This is why women become lesbians,” she grumbles. “What’s for dinner? I’m starving and can Sam come over to do my hair?”

“What do you like on your pizza, Jimmy?”

“He’s not staying for dinner,” Kiesha cries.

“Whatever. I’m not picky.”

“What about Sam? Will they be eating with us?”

“No. We’ll starve in my room.”

I roll my eyes as she stomps down the hallway. At least I don’t have to worry about Kiesha getting all googly eyed for a biker like her sister did. I grab my phone to place the order and my thoughts drift to Prodigy. I want to call him, but I’m still irritated about his jerk behavior. “Make yourself at home. We have a bunch of streaming apps and an Xbox in the living room.”

“Sweet.” Jimmy shuffles out of the kitchen.

Away from the clubhouse and that environment, Jimmy looks like he could be Kiesha’s boyfriend. He’s practically a kid. I wonder what his folks think about him wanting to be in a biker club. Or maybe they don’t care and that’s why he’s trying to join. Not all kids are lucky to have a good home life.
