“It’s not fair. The dance is a few weeks away, and I don’t have a date. Sam is going to their dad’s, so I won’t even have them. This is cruel and unusual punishment. No guy is going to ask me with Jimmy up my ass.”

“Language,” Zoe warns.

“Mooom. Please. Let me stay home then. Write me a note saying I’m sick or that we’re going out of town. At least then I won’t look like a dateless loser.”

“Honey, no one is going to think that. And if they do, then why would you want friends like that?”

“You don’t have a clue what it’s like. My social life is ruined.”

Snatching a clean shirt from my bag, I pull it over my head as I hit the kitchen.

Both of them are strangely quiet and staring at me.

“What?” I grumble.

“All right, Mom.” Kiesha states, holding her hand up like she’s waiting for a high five.

“Put your hand down,” Zoe says, while shaking her head. “Sorry if we woke you.”

“You know there are police officers at school. I’ll be fine. Come on. You look like a reasonable man. Tell her I’ll be fine.” She pouts her bottom lip, giving me puppy dog eyes.

“Who do you think has Jimmy watching over you?”

“Traitor.”

“Only trying to keep you safe. I don’t know what all you know, but I’m going to be straight with you. Your father is a dangerous and desperate individual. Until I have confirmation he’s not a threat to your mom or you and your sisters, then you’ll have the club’s protection.”

“Did you say sisters?”

“Shit,” Zoe hisses.

“Mom? Are you pregnant?”

“Maybe I should write that sick note.”

“What’s going on? Oh, my god. Are you guys like getting married or something already? Am I going to be a big sister?”

“Why don’t I make some coffee while you two talk?” I move toward the coffeemaker. I can feel the heat of the lasers beaming out of Zoe’s eyes, hitting my back. She may kill me before I get coffee.

“We’ll talk about it once Kimber gets here. But no. I’m not pregnant. We’re not getting married.”

“Yet,” I huff under my breath and wink at Kiesha. She lets out a giggle as Kimber and Nav arrive, trailed by Jimmy.

“What’s so funny?” Kimber plops down at the kitchen table next to her sister.

“Mom’s getting married.”

“Oh my god, seriously?” Kimber squeals.

Zoe glares at me. “Don’t look at me. I’m only here for coffee.” I grin and Nav shoots me a look like ‘see what I have to put up with’. Females are crazy, but Zoe and her girls are the good nuts.

“I do have something to discuss with you, but I need caffeine first.” The girls sit up straighter, noting the serious tone of their mother’s voice.

Nav and I pass out coffees while Jimmy hangs back near the door like he’s ready to run out it at any second. Can’t say I blame him with the mean looks Kiesha keeps shooting his way. She’s got a dramatic flair that a lot of men will tire of fast. The right one will think her sass is a challenge and love that chase. Girl has some heartbreaks and lessons headed her way.

Another reason I put Jimmy as her shadow. He’s going to be a great distraction from all the shit that’s to come. She may not like him right now, but sometimes there’s a thin line between love and hate. Kiesha is a wild one. It will take one hell of a man to tame her.

“I don’t even know where to start.” Zoe takes a sip of her coffee and I move in to stand behind her chair to remind her I’ve got her back. “You remember Murder’s sister Lily and that sometimes I hire on some of the women she helps get back on their feet. That’s how I met Marie. She’s a single mom, much like I was when I first left your father, struggling to find a job and take care of you guys. I hired her with no questions asked. Like I said, she has a child, and she brought her daughter to work with her. One look at that little girl and I identified that she was your father’s daughter. She resembles Kiesha so much at that age. It’s really uncanny.”
