“I know you worry, but it’s really unnecessary.”

“It is until that fucker is off our streets. How about a compromise? I’ll drive you to the bank, then drop you with your girls for lunch and meet up with you after. We just gotta swing by my shop first.”

My overprotective man wouldn’t take me to the bank until I agreed to put his special pen blade in my purse. A sharp blade disguised as a fountain pen. Another concealed in a lipstick tube. He’s not taking any chances with my safety.

One never wakes up thinking, I really hope I don’t have to stab someone today. Maybe if I had one of these self-defense weapons the other night, I could have saved us all a lot of grief by stabbing Adam. It’s a terrible yet perfectly reasonable response to all the trauma he’s inflicted throughout the years. When do we stop trying to redeem monsters? Not everyone is meant to be saved.

Some people have demons that a far too great to overcome.

Damned souls.

Wretched people who are barely human.

“You need anything, Crawl will be at the bar keeping an eye out.”

“I’ll be fine. I’ve got my deadly lipstick.” I press my lips to his as he idles in front of the restaurant. I will not bother to argue that Crawl’s playing bodyguard wasn’t part of our compromise. The truth is, until I see Adam is being dealt with, I won’t feel entirely safe.

Who knows how desperate he is or what he’ll attempt next?

“Have fun gossiping about how good I am in bed.”

That’s totally what we will be talking about, but I’m not about to admit it. “You wish.”

“Text me when you’re done, and I’ll swing back by.”

As I’m entering the restaurant, Link pulls up and I give him a wave.

They must be going hunting for Adam.

My stomach does a roll.

I realize they can look after themselves, but he’s armed and unhinged.

Pam, Rosie, and Karma are already here.

I wasn’t expecting to see Karma. I understand I’m not her favorite person because of Hound. We aren’t enemies, but we aren’t what I’d call friends either.

I take my seat in the booth next to Pam.

“Hope you don’t mind my tagging along with Rosie.”

“Of course not. The more the merrier.”

“I figured you could use a drink.” Pam slides a screwdriver my way. “We ordered some onion petals, too.”

“Sounds good.” I suck down half of my drink and place my order with the server.

“We want all the tea.”

“Yes, please and then maybe you can teach me the trick to parenting a tween girl who hates you.”

“Letti still giving you the cold shoulder?”

“That house is Antarctica, that kid is so cold,” Karma says.

“Be patient. She’ll come around.” That little girl has been through a lot the past year. She lost her mom in a horrific way. Was forced to move from the only home she knew. A new school. New house. New people, including your dad’s new girlfriend, is a lot for her.

“I hope so. Xavier asked me to move in with them.”
