“Outside of my school.”
“What was he doing?”
“I was sitting in fourth period when I had that creepy feeling like someone was watching me. I glanced out the window and I swear he was standing across the road. He waved at me.”
“Is he still there?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Is Jimmy still with you?”
“Yeah.”
“Let me talk to him.”
I hear her passing the phone to Jimmy, mumbling, “he wants to talk to you.”
“Hey. It’s uh Jimmy.”
“No shit, sherlock. Did you see him?”
“No.”
“Where were you?”
“I was in the library.”
“What the fuck for?”
“You told me to blend in. I’ve had to get creative and can’t exactly hang out in the bathrooms all day.”
“I’m going to send someone to scope out the school. When you get the all clear from me, I want you to take Kiesha to the clubhouse and keep her there until I tell you otherwise. Got me?”
“Understood.”
I hang up with Jimmy and dial Roane as Link walks out of the bar.
“Need you to do me a favor and swing by the school and see if there’s any sign of Adam? Kiesha thinks she saw him and I’m too far away right now to check.”
Roane is married to Pam’s sister Jules and his tattoo shop that my sister works at is closer to the school than the clubhouse, so he can get there quicker than anyone else.
“I’m on it. Call you after.”
I end that call and turn to Link to see if he got anything out of Karl Dean while I light up a cigarette.
“Vivian asked me to give you her number.” He hands me a napkin with a phone number written on it in red lipstick.
“Fuck you.” I wad it up and throw it back at him as he nearly doubles over laughing.
“I’ll give it a go but gotta warn you, I don’t look anything like my sister when I put on a blonde wig.”
“Jesus, there’s a picture I never wanted to see in my head, asshole. Thanks a lot. What’s Karl Dean say?”
“He’s not seen the sorry fuck in a couple of years. That scrawny ass stripper said she knows him, and Marie used to have a rental around Chapmanville.”
“Kiesha called me and said she thought she saw him standing outside of her school. I sent Roane to check it out.”
“We could swing by the trailer on our way back if the school doesn’t pan out.”
