“Well, that makes sense.”

“She was beautiful, wasn’t she?” Kimber nods to Rochelle’s picture.

“Yeah. She was.” I hug her a little harder and squeeze her tighter. I wouldn’t trade my girls for anything, but if I could turn back time, I’d definitely chosen a better man to be their father. Only then they wouldn’t be who they are now and I wouldn’t have Prodigy. “What time is it? Your sister should be getting here.”

No sooner than I speak the words, she comes barreling through the door with Jimmy, practically running to keep up with her.

“Mom,” she says on a cry, throwing her arms around both her sister and I.

“Hey now. What’s wrong?”

“I needed to see you. Did Prodigy find Dad?”

I shake my head as I pull back from the death hold she has on my neck. “Not that I am aware of.”

“Did he tell you I saw him standing outside of my school? So creepy. Like Michael Meyers or something. He was just standing there, and I swear when our eyes connected, he waved at me.”

The chill bumps on my arms increase, making the hair there stand on end. “He was at your school?”

She nods. “Totally freaked me out.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I didn’t want to worry you. Besides, I had Jimmy there to protect me. He said he’s going to teach me to play pool.” She squeals, then darts toward the pool tables where he’s waiting for her.

“Oh no,” I murmur to Kimber.

“What?”

“I think she’s starting to like him.”

Kimber laughs. “Well, it would be convenient, wouldn’t it? We’d all have us a royal bastard to look after us.

“I suppose there could be worse things.”

“Like an angry girlfriend.”

“What?”

“Don’t look now, but Jimmy’s girlfriend has arrived, and she does not look thrilled.”

There’s no missing the chubby girl stomping her way through the bar trailed by Ember, Prodigy’s sister, on her way to the pool tables and Jimmy. Where he so happens to have his arms around my daughter teaching her how to aim the stick to break the balls.

“I should go over there.”

“Don’t. Kiesha will get embarrassed.”

“Better to be embarrassed than get your hair pulled.”

I keep a close eye on my youngest daughter as Jimmy gets a finger wagging in his face.

Ember joins Kimber and me at our table. “Hey. This is awkward, huh?” She lets out a deflated sigh.

“What did the prospect do?”

“Forgot her birthday.”

“Oh dear. That’s not sounding good for him.”
