The two of them dive into a private conversation about Stella coming by the store, which leads to her asking how we know each other.

“Funny you should ask. Your pal T-bird is moving into the unit next to mine at Riverside. And he happened by a great coincidence to come to my rescue today when I got a flat on my way to grab lunch.”

Bianca glares at me and my hand instantly moves under the table to my groin to shield my dick. Fuck me. I hope she isn’t putting some hex on my dick somehow. That’s all I need when I meet a hot new chick I want to bang. I can imagine it now. Getting her all primed and ready and when it comes time to fuck her brains out, my dick going limp as a wet noodle or some shit. Would be my worst nightmare come true.

“How’d you manage to get in there? They never have any openings and I hear the waitlist is crazy long,” Ember asks. “We tried every way in the world to get in there before my brother moved in with Zoe.”

“My neighbor passed away suddenly,” Stella tells her, earning me another mean look from Bianca.

Great. Now I’m going to have to convince Sandman’s little witch that I didn’t have anything to do with that, either. By the time we order our food, I’m going to be dickless. Possibly nutless too. Knowing Bianca’s vindictive side, I could end up with prunes in place of my balls.

She probably has some potion already connected to spike my beer. Probably has it tucked in her little black purse, just waiting for the perfect moment to fuck with me.

“I applied there a few years back and finally got the call. Guess my name was at the top of the waiting list.”

“Should get Jimmy to take over the lease on your current shithole,” Smoke mutters.

“Be nice,” Ember hisses.

“Babydoll, your best friend is a real pain in the ass. I don’t mind Jimmy, but she’s got to go. If I hear her screeching at him one more time, I swear to fuck I’ll pack her shit and toss it to the neighbor’s dogs.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” she huffs and the two of them start bickering while the rest of us do our best to ignore them. Though I admit the scene of them not getting along gives me some satisfaction.

Could there be trouble in paradise?

I guess the grass isn’t always greener.

Chapter Seven

Being surrounded by these guys and their wives and girlfriends, I can see that they aren’t bad people. But I can’t shake the feeling that they all know what really happened to my sister. I get the impression that they are dancing around mentioning her. Maybe I’m being paranoid.

I bite into my cheesy garlic stick and comment on how much Shiloh loved coming here.

“I had no idea you were related to Shiloh,” Bianca tells me.

To be fair, we’ve never favored. I take after our mother more than she does. Did. Shiloh favored our father’s sister. Our Aunt Deb. Who also died young in an accidental drowning. Similar to Shiloh. My skin crawls at the realization and now I don’t really want to draw on those comparisons and decide maybe a change of subject is in order.

“I didn’t know you were married,” I counter.

“Almost a year. Though speaking of your sister, I’ll be honest. Your sister wasn’t liked much by me or any of the other wives or girlfriends. But to be fair, you wouldn’t have liked her much either if she was always scheming to fuck your man. Which she was quite often, I might add. She wasn’t the nicest person.”

My throat tightens at her honesty. I know she’s likely telling the truth. My sister wasn’t a saint by any means. However, I know with every fiber of my being, she wouldn’t have been that stupid to have ended her life in the nature they claim.

They describe someone desperate for love and attention. Not the fun-loving sister I knew her to be. “Did she sleep with your husband?” I accuse. Not liking the things she’s implying, Like Shiloh was only out to get any man on a motorcycle whether he was already with someone or not.

“Blunt. But I’d ask too. She did before we got together.”

“I don’t really know how to respond. Sorry seems weird and wrong to say. We didn’t always discuss that part of her life. Though I guess in the months leading up to her death, we’d grown apart.” I don’t dive into the bitter and awful breakup I went through with Jacob. The lying, cheating asshole. The distance my sister put between us when I needed her the most.

“I wish I could tell you that she was awesome and that we all had respect for her, but the truth is she didn’t respect herself enough to be able to have any for anyone else. Your sister kind of hated herself.”

It would be easy to argue that she didn’t know my sister like I did, but maybe I didn’t know her like they did either. I’m confused. Sad even.

I glance at the group and wonder if she screwed every man at this table. Well, expect the one I came with. Maybe he only told me he didn’t fuck her to make me feel better or to protect himself.

Trenton and that Ember chick have a connection that gives me the impression that there’s more than friendship between them. Does the man she’s with know? He has to. It’s obvious to me and I’ve only known them for half an hour. The way he stares at her when he thinks no one is paying attention…he’s in love with her.

A pang of jealously twitches in my lower belly. Whatever he has going on is none of my business. I shouldn’t care one way or the other and yet I do. The conversation dies down and I finish the last slice of my pizza.
