“No way.”

“What in the hell is wrong with you?” T-bird shouts at me, prying my fingers loose from his besties’s hair.

“She said awful shit about my sister.” Tears stream down my face. I’m pissed off and embarrassed.

“What the fuck did you say?” Smoke growls at Ember as he drags her toward his bike.

Trenton shakes his head as Sandman releases me.

He rejoins Bianca, who shoots me a sympathetic smile before they take off.

“Leave you alone for two seconds and you start a fight. What gives?”

I shrug. “I lost my temper. It’s been an emotional week for me.”

“I get that, but I gotta tell you, babe. Not a good look the first time you meet my friends to go attacking them.”

“I don’t care what they think about me. They clearly hated my sister. You included.”

“Listen, there’s a lot you don’t know about your sister. I get it. My old man wasn’t what I thought he was, either. Didn’t mean I didn’t love him or make it hurt any less when he was killed.”

“I’m sorry that you lost him.” Guess there’s one thing we have in common.

“Happened some years back. A crazy bitch had him murdered.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, but that’s another story for another time.” He says that like we’re gong to hang out again after this disaster.

“Will you tell me what you know? What you really know about Shiloh.” I’ve gotta keep him talking while I can.

He caps a hand to the back of neck and lets out a long sigh. “Fuck.”

“That’s not exactly encouraging.” I rub the side of my head where that chick landed her punch and note the scratches on my arms that look like a feral cat attacked me.

“You want to go for a drink?”

Everything inside me tells me that I should say no. Call a cab. Do anything but climb back on this guy’s motorcycle, but that’s exactly what I do. I wrap my arms around him and hold on tight.

I must be crazy.

Chapter Eight

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” Smoke pulls me away from Stella and we go to the other end of the parking lot.

I glance back to see Stella and Ember chatting. Hopefully, she’s talking me up. Putting in a good word for me and telling her what a great guy I am.

“What’s up, man?”

“What the fuck were you thinking bringing her here?”

“I didn’t know you guys were going to be here.”

“So, Ember didn’t invite you?”

“On your little lunch date? Why would she?”

His furrowed brows relax, “You can’t tell this bitch the truth.”
