“Fuck. I-–”

“You what? What could you possibly think you had to gain by coming here and dropping this shit in my lap? Why? Did you not hurt me enough the last time we spoke to each other? You’re sick. You need to leave, or I will call someone to make you.”

“My name is still on the lease.”

“Try again. I had that changed months ago.”

“Where am I going to go?”

“That’s not my problem.”

“I fucked up.”

“Yeah. You did. And I’m fucking glad. You did me a favor.”

Another knock sounds at my door and I wonder if it’s the people upstairs coming to complain about the yelling.

“Excuse me.” I go to the door without looking through the peephole. I’m irritated and want to get whoever it is gone so I can get Jacob out of here. I still don’t know what possessed him into thinking showing up at my door was a good idea. Swinging the door open, I come face to face with Trenton.

“Um, hi. What are you…” I step into the breezeway, allowing the door to shut behind me.

“I wanted to be sure you got home, okay. I wasn’t sure what your phone number was. Forgot to ask and I don’t really do the whole social media thing.” He leans in doing that hot guy thing. One arm resting on the door frame, pressing my back to the wall as he towers over me.

“As you can see, I’m home. Safe. Sober.”

I watch intently as he rubs his tempting and oh so kissable lips together.

“Not going to invite me in?” He smirks, catching me staring.

“Right now. Or like another day?”

He chuckles and his minty breath fans over my lips, telling me that he went home and freshened up before coming over.

“You’re funny. I got home and I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”

I swallow. “Now isn’t really a good time for me.”

“That’s cool. I mean, if you only want to be friends or strictly neighbors who smile awkwardly when we pass each other, I can do that too.”

“It’s not that, Trenton. I had kind of a good time, I guess you could say.” Before I can elaborate further, my front door opens, and Jacob pokes his head out.

“There you are. Thought you had gotten lost on me. Am I interrupting something here?”

Trenton takes a step back, glancing from Jacob back to me. “Right. I’ll see you around, neighbor.” He caps a palm over his fist, then takes off before I can correct him. He’s totally got the wrong idea.

I start to go after him, but I have Jacob to get out of my life a second time.

“You have really shit timing.” I stomp back inside. “You came and said what you wanted to. I heard you out. Now I need you to really hear me and go. I don’t care where. You can’t stay here.”

“Let me sleep on the couch. I promise I’ll take off first thing tomorrow. Please, Stells.” He makes this stupid pouting face. One that used to melt my heart. Now when I look at him, all I feel is pity.

“You can sleep on the couch tonight, but that’s it. When I wake up tomorrow, I do not want to see you still here.”

He nods. “I swear.”

“And don’t get any ideas. I mean it. You sleep on the couch. Don’t try to talk to me. No sneaking into my room later.”

“You won’t even know I’m here.”
