“Crazy bitch.” He jerks his pants up and I keep at him until he flees out the door.

Tomorrow I’m having the locks changed.

Chapter 11

One Week Later

“Is that all of it?” Nav asks. He volunteered to help me move today. Jimmy had shit to do for the club and I sure as fuck wasn’t going to ask Smoke. Everyone else has their own shit going on.

“I think so. Let me do another walkthrough to be sure.” One last pass and I find a shoe with no match in the back of the closet. I hold up the boot and Nav laughs.

“Woulda sucked to leave that behind.”

“No kidding. I think I paid two-fifty for the damn things.” I drop the keys on the counter and close the door for the last time. Made a lot of good memories in that shitty ass apartment. Movie night with Ember and Jimmy and his bitch. Doubt we’ll be doing that again anytime soon. We’ve not spoken since the other day when she got into that tiff with Stella. Thinking about her, I smile as I climb into the box truck I borrowed from the club.

“What are you grinning about?”

“Nothing. Glad to be out of this tiny ass place.”

When we roll up to my new apartment, Stella’s car isn’t in the lot. She swung by the garage and picked it up when I wasn’t there. Jim said she tried to argue when he told her I paid for her tire and the new rim. Was the least I could do after all the bullshit. Her boyfriend may not appreciate the gesture, but that’s not my problem. Guy looked like a complete tool and not her type. Not that I know what her type is. Thought maybe we were forming a connection. Guess it was the liquor and her heightened emotions.

The grief of her sister. The fight with Ember. Getting a flat tire. That stupid note I left on her car. Whatever it was. It doesn’t matter. She has her life and I have mine.

We’re getting the couch in when the door to Stella’s apartment opens and her preppy looking boyfriend strolls out. He appears surprised to see me again but lifts his chin.

“You need any help?”

“We’ve got it, but thanks.” The last thing I want is for the guy to be nice. I have enough friends.

We get the couch in and drop it where I want it. “Thought you said your neighbor was a hot chick?”

“She is. That’s her ugly ass boyfriend.” I laugh and light us up a joint. Too bad Stella won’t be baking me those welcome to the neighborhood brownies.

Nav finishes helping me get all the heavy stuff unloaded and his Ol’ Lady, Kimber, grabs us some burgers to appease our munchies and drops off some groceries to save me a trip to the store to get me started. I’d already brought most of the small stuff in this morning. Not that I had a lot. I keep things minimalistic. He’s dropping the truck back at the club, so I don’t have to.

“I’m about to head out.”

“Hey, before I forget about it. Not that it’s any of my business, but the other day I had to give Kiesha a ride to school. Caught her out by one of the buildings with Jimmy. I didn’t rat him out to Link, but I didn’t cover for him either. Little shit is playing with fire. You might try having a word with him before that shit blows up in his face.”

“Dumbass doesn’t listen. I tried telling him how shit went down for Kimber and me. Thought Link was going to kill me.”

“We all did.”

“He’ll have to learn the hard way, like the rest of us. Good looking out, though. I swear Zoe thought Kimber was wild, but Kiesha has us all on alert all the damn time. She ditches school so damn much she will be lucky to graduate. That or she’s going to end up pregnant.”

“I don’t envy Prodigy having to deal with the dramatics of teenage girls.”

“She’ll calm down, eventually.”

“Eventually being the keyword there. I appreciate the help today.” I hand him a couple of joints as payment.

“We have church tonight. Around nine. Prez wants you there.”

“Cool. I’ll be there.”

He takes off and I unpack my shit. I shove my earbuds in and turn on some music to keep me from listening for the sexy woman across the hall to come home. Another one who isn’t meant to be mine slips through my fingers. My life is like a bad country song.

I get a notification that Stella uploaded a new episode to her podcast.
