“What do you want with this bottom dweller?” Gage says after a few minutes of typing.

“He’s threatening my girl,” I reply, chuckling at Gage’s surprise, and give him a condensed version of how I found Sadie. “She’s it for me and won’t let some ass like that hurt her. He’s already given her a black eye, sent her running because he wanted to sell her at an auction he apparently runs to get his money back.”

“Doesn’t look like he actually puts on the auction, just supplies most of the girls to it,” Gage grunts down the line. “It’s run by…a fucker that’s about to get his head based in,” he finished, his tone darker than I’ve ever heard which is saying something.

Unlike me, he didn’t have a family and instead, spent fifteen years in the military before nearly being blown up and getting medically discharged. He owns the property next to mine on the mountain and we’ve gotten to be friends over the last few years. He’s good with computers and helps track down people and threats. I used him to help me find who was leaving fake reviews and threats against the resort two years ago so I’m not shocked that he found shit out on Jonah already. I am, however, shocked by his words.

“What’s going on?” I question, hearing telltale signs that he’s moving around and keys in the background.

“What’s going on is that the asshole running the auction puts pictures of the girls up. There’s one of a Sadie that I’m guessing is yours,” he answers, and I nearly crushed the egg in my hand as I let out a curse.

“Sky blue eyes, long blonde hair, sweet smile,” I state as my phone buzzed and there was a picture of my girl I know isn’t recent. Her cheeks are fuller in it and she’s smiling brightly. It looks like it’s a yearbook photo and fuck, I want that glow about her back and to stay for good. “That’s my Sadie.”

“Well she’s not the only one on there that’s not being offered up to these fucks. Emery’s on it,” he seethes, explaining why he’s so out of it. He promised his army buddy that he’d keep an eye on his little sister while he bled out after the explosion, but by the time Gage got home, Emery had disappeared. She was only sixteen at the time, making her right around Sadie’s age now. I know he’s looked for her since then without any luck, so if she’s there, someone’s head is about to roll.

“I take it you’re going to get her.”

“I’m going. You want me to handle the fucker in person for you? If he has anything to do with Emery being on that website, he’s a dead man anyway,” Gage says and as much as I’d love to do some damage of my own, Sadie’s more important than seeking revenge with my fists. If I go there, that leaves Sadie here alone, and it gives him at least a way to find her unless he’s buried in the ground. Doing that risks leaving Sadie on her own for a lot longer than a night, and I won’t chance it.

“I was going to pay him off to get him away from us, but now, make him understand what happens when he tries to force girls to do things they don’t want to do. And especially what happens when he puts his hands on them,” I state, getting Gage’s confirmation he’ll ensure he gets the message before I hang up, focusing on finishing the meal to take care of my girl.

Sadie sleeps until I slip back to her, waking her with a kiss once the food is ready. “You can go back to being my sleeping beauty after you eat, so that later tonight, I can make your pussy purr again.”

“Mmm, I think I can agree to that,” she says with a smile, and I take her to the kitchen, watching as she looks around the space, her jaw open wide in surprise. “Kellan…”

“I told you five thousand dollars won’t bother me, baby. In truth, you could spend five hundred thousand and it still wouldn’t bother me,” I add guiding her into her seat. “My family owns the Foster Luxury Ski Resorts. We have eight of them around the US and Canada now. We used to just have two, the one here and one in Colorado when my father was alive, but after he died, I took over then expanded, opened the others. They’re at the top of the list for the best destinations in travel magazines every year.”

“So you’re rich?” Sadie says, her eyes growing wary, and I slip a hand behind her head, tilting her head back to kiss her. I let it linger, soft and sweet, until she’s leaning into me fully, the tension gone once more.

“Yes, baby. I’m rich, which means you’re now rich. It also means that no one is going to get near you to hurt you or scare you ever again. Including that asshole Jonah,” I add, brushing her hair from her face, before picking up her fork to get her to start eating the omelet I made her.

It’s full of spinach and tomatoes and cheese. She needs the iron and protein, not to mention the calories from the cheese and one of the banana nut muffins that I grabbed from the resort yesterday morning before leaving to head into the mountains. I had to go in and sign some paperwork, but that’d only taken fifteen minutes. After that, I came back here, scarfed down one of the muffins because they’re my favorite and my baking skills aren’t close to my cooking, then headed out after a quick change.

Thank god I went out there and found Sadie. If something had happened to her, if she’d been stuck there with no heat…I won’t go there. Not after it’s taken all this time to find her. Especially not today of all days. The day where we’re all extremely cognizant of what can happen during snowstorms to even the most prepared—like my dad. Sadie’s here with me, safe and sound, and soon, she’ll be my wife.

“If he knows you have money…”

I shake my head, stopping Sadie’s new worry. It’s my job to worry, to do what’s necessary to protect my family. She’s worried about that ass for the last time. “I called a friend while you were sleeping. He owns the land next to us, and also is ex-military and good with computers. He found who Jonah is and also found out more on the auction he finds girls for. Unfortunately for Jonah, one of the girls it looks like he found is someone that Gage has been looking for going on five years now. Her brother was in Gage’s unit and their convoy was hit with an IED. Gage barely made it out, but his friend didn’t. He’d asked Gage to watch out for Emery, but by the time he got back to the states, Emery, her mom and stepfather were gone. If Emery’s being forced to be there, it’s not going to be pretty. Hell, even if she’s only doing it to make money, it’s not going to be pretty because the last thing that Gage would want is her to do something like that solely for money.”

“And he’s going to deal with Jonah for me?” Sadie asks and I nod. “So there’s nothing…”

“There’s nothing he can do to you, nothing to worry about, baby. After you eat, I’ll show you around the house, then tuck you in to get some more sleep. You need it so don’t argue with me about it. I’ll be working in my office which is right across the hall from our room as well,” I explain to her, making sure she eats everything before letting her up from the table.

I do a quick tour, so she knows her way around, ending with our bedroom. Before I forget, I program in her prints so she can come and go from my office as needed, then tuck her in wearing just my shirt with only a long, sweet kiss.

My dick is begging for more, but sleep is the best thing for her right now.

Chapter 9

Sadie

I stretch feeling the incredible softness of not only the sheets under me, but the bed as well. It feels like a cloud, and I can’t stop the smile that hits, amazed at the changes less than twenty-four hours have brought. Yesterday I was running for my life and today, I’m waking from an afternoon nap filled with relief—and love.

The clock shows it’s almost four o’clock. The sun is lowering in the sky, it’ll be dark in a couple hours, but that nap was so worth losing some sunlight for.

I slip into the bathroom, then find some of Kellan’s socks for my cold feet, before moving across the hall to see if he’s still in his office.

I couldn’t believe it when he says he ran the Foster Resorts. Images of them are plastered all over Seattle since there’s one a little over two hours away. There was a spread about them in a magazine left at the coffee shop and I glanced through the pictures, dreaming of a vacation there, being pampered at the spa or relaxing in a hot tub. I never imagined it could come true. It was on par with winning the lottery. But here I am, with Kellan in this amazing house, with him cooking for me, keeping me safe and loving me.
