Our forever isn’t over, because the stars are finally aligning for our lives to begin as one.

My breath hitches when my mother places her hands on the center of my back, her magical voice singing into my ear. “Think of breaking a shield, one created solely by darkness, because that’s what it will feel like.”

The air grows denser, cementing my feet more firmly into the ground.

“Even when it feels too much, don’t stop. You must not pull back. There is only one chance to free yourself and all those with you. Only you can do this.” My mother’s voice is strong, holding the strength of a Goddess.

Pressure builds in my chest, tightening as my breaths become labored. Every ounce of my power hums beneath my skin, heavy and buzzing, wanting to explode free. Gritting my teeth, I draw in one final lungful of air until it stings, before letting the light blast out of me. The force of it slides my feet backward on the soil, but my mother’s hold steadies me, offering her strength.

Blinding light is all I can see. My molars grind together, and my skin feels like it’s melting off my body. As if flames are licking just beneath the surface and searing through bone. The pain is agonizing, like I’m being burned alive.

A guttural scream tears through my throat when my power slams into the wall of darkness trapping us here. It’s solid, unfazed by the first touch of my power.

“Fight it, Emma!” My mother’s voice echoes faintly in the back of my mind.

Tears bleed from my eyes, and something wet drips from my nose as I push past the ripples of pain. But I won’t stop. I will fucking fight to make my way back to him. Even if this kills me, at least the chosen will be free and won’t be forgotten anymore. Draven will have his people back, never to feel like an outcast again. He will be able to fly with his kind.

Waves and waves of light penetrate the wall, pounding relentlessly. Another searing scream shreds the insides of my throat. Chest heaving, muscles strained tight. The earth beneath my feet struggling against the weight, my feet digging further into the soil.

But then the shield starts to crack. A fissure spreading from its center, weakening as I target more power to that spot. Shadows begin to creep around the edges of my vision, and white spots start to float around me. Everything doubles.

My blood burns me up from within like every nerve in my body is being torn apart, piece by piece. More wetness trickles from my nose as I exert more power. Crying out, my knees slamming into the hard ground.

“Keep going! You’re almost there!” My mother’s voice sounds far away, barely audible as the world around me grows hazy.

Right when my body feels like it will give out, a burst of energy courses through me, causing my spine to arch as an earth-shattering scream expels deeply within my chest.

My mother’s power she’s been holding flares to life inside me, giving the extra boost my body needs. It streams through me, flowing through every vein, before exploding free, combining with my light, and detonating the remaining strength of the wall.

In the next heartbeat, it shatters. Falling away as my palms hit the ground in front of me. My muscles are heavy, weighing me down as my mind tries to come back into focus. But then, shrieks and roars fill the air.

In what seems like slow motion, I lift my head to see hundreds of wyverns flying above me. Ones that look just like Draven in the way he shifts into his wings and others… The ones who must be from the very beginning of the bloodline have shifted into full-blown wyverns. Their massive, scaled bodies soar above me as shadows dance around them, all heading towards the opening that leads back to the living. The path to return their souls to their waiting bodies.

I watch in awe as they all peer down at me with slitted eyes when they pass, bowing their heads. Suddenly, my head feels too heavy, but hands cup my cheeks, catching me before my skull hits the ground.

Gently, those hands turn my head, only to find grey eyes that match mine glistening back at me. “It’s time for you to go home, my sweet girl.”

My mother wipes away some of the blood staining beneath my nose, her fingers coming away red, before pressing a loving kiss to my forehead. Everything hurts. It’s hard to breathe as my limbs shake beneath me, unsure if I can stand.

With a wave of my mother’s hand, one of the fully shifted wyverns swoops down, landing before us, and my jaw goes slack. Its giant claw digs into the earth, its wings spread out, before dipping down to the ground. Am I supposed to ride it?

The answer to my question is given when Kye scoops his arms beneath me, curling me to his chest. My arms barely have the strength to cling onto his broad neck as he takes long strides to the wyvern. A slitted eye watches me as we approach, before Kye gently lifts me, setting me at the base of the wyvern’s neck.

Kye gives me a final peck on the cheek before backing away. He must notice my shallow breathing and the slight tremble taking over my limbs because he says, “You saved them all, Princess. Now save yourself.”

My mother gives a soft pat to the wyvern’s thick neck. “Do not be afraid, my daughter. It is a sign of respect and honor for one to allow someone to ride on its back.”

Steadying myself, I study the beast beneath me. The scales are woven together to create a smooth but thick layer of skin. A shield of its own. Spikes penetrate from the head that follow the length of the spine as I settle between them, curling my fingers around two for support.

A gasp leaves me when a band of shadows secures me against the Wyvern, holding me against its body, and I couldn’t be more thankful.

A barbed tail swishes through the air before it pushes off the ground with two powerful legs and its wings slam down in one mighty stroke. A throaty growl vibrates its body, building up for a roar that ricochets through the air. It sounds like hope for life. A cry of freedom.

As we ascend, I never take my eyes off my mother’s. She rests her palm on her chest, right above her heart, mouthing until we meet again. I silently mouth I love you as I stretch my hand out.

But now, her frame starts to become smaller the farther we fly.

This should hurt, but instead, my heart feels light. I got to see them all one last time, and that is a gift I will cherish forever. One that will always bring me peace.
