WE WOULD HAVE FOUGHT.

If it weren’t for the mind magic command that glued us to our feet and made it impossible for us to move, we would have tried our best to fight and win.

There were only ten soldiers with us inside the room; certainly not enough to trap all of us if it weren’t for the heavy blanket that quickly covered our minds.

Stop.

Cari’s voice did not sound like hers. Her reach was more potent than it had ever been. She was everywhere, yet I knew with certainty that she wasn’t messing with my thoughts. The guard squeezed my arm and pushed me to step into the middle of the room.

She was allowing me the freedom to think as I wished while preventing me from doing anything against her will.

“There is no need for that,” Cari said to the guard. “I have them.”

Why are you doing this? I asked her. Frustration joined with my anger and fear. I knew she was in my mind. I was feeling her more strongly than ever. She knew exactly what I felt.

It was a trap, she said, her voice surprised. I am serving the queen.

Why? I asked again, my thoughts almost a scream.

She did not respond. I felt her confusion.

“We were told to bring them to the mirror,” the guard replied. “Queen’s orders.”

Cari did not respond. She was focused on me. She seemed thoughtful for a second before she turned to Fiona and laughed.

“Are you trying to make me feel sad, princess?” She asked. “Oh? Guilty. That is rich! Why should I feel guilty when you only came here to get rid of the weapon? Am I to assume you would have come to save me if I hadn’t tricked you?”

I could not believe it. Cari’s face twisted with anger as though she blamed us for something. It made little sense. She had been inside my mind all along, and it was difficult to accept that I’d been tricked into thinking she was my friend.

“Why are you letting us speak?” I asked as I realized I was free to speak as I wished. On the other hand, Kieran was struggling against Cari’s mind magic so fiercely that he seemed unable to breathe.

Cari paused, and when she turned to me, her gaze was full of confusion.

“Why shouldn’t I?” She forced a smile on her lips. “Speaking will not stop what is coming.”

Anger flared in me. I tried to move against her command, but her power was much stronger than mine. She did not even flinch as she buried the urge in me. I could not move, and now, I didn’t even want to move.

“Stop it now,” Cari said. “We have visitors.”

As soon as she said those words, one of the mirrors in front of me started to shimmer with a gloomy light. I stared at it as the Queen of Light appeared on the other side of the portal.

Fear replaced the anger in me. The queen’s eyes darted across our group, her lips quivering with delight as she saw Fiona and Kieran. She looked like she was going to jump up and down with joy, but she remained regal and unmoved.

The room on the other side of the portal was one I did not recognize, but it was clear that she was in her palace. It was night there too, but the other side looked much brighter.

There were others with her. I saw them through the corner of my eye; soldiers and old men who looked ominous while stuck into a long and wide mirror.

“You’ve done well,” the Queen of Light said.

“I did,” Cari said, with no ounce of humility in her voice.

“And you managed to get yourself out, too,” the queen added with a hint of annoyance in her tone.

“I did,” Cari replied.

“It won’t matter,” the queen continued.
