“No,” Cari said. “It won’t.”

I watched the conversation between them, trying to understand what they were saying. Then, without thinking, I reached to Cari.

What is keeping you here?

She was surprised to hear me in her mind, but she kept her expression flat.

That is none of your business, she replied.

So it is true that you’re trapped, I said, feeling sad for her despite my anger.

Don’t, she slapped away the rising emotion in me at once. Your situation is much worse than mine.

She was right. With Cari’s magic, we were blocked from ours. There was no way for us to fight against all the soldiers surrounding us. And once Cari made us pass through the portal, the queen would do with us as she pleased.

She had tricked us into coming here and now we were at the queen’s mercy. I felt fear for my friends and she was the reason we were trapped.

“I see you have the Prince of Dark,” the queen said. “And is that the princess? I was utterly saddened when we realized you hadn’t joined our ranks like we assumed you had many years ago.”

She was looking at Fiona now.

“How did you do it?” She asked, taking a step forward in excitement.

“My queen,” one of the men standing behind the queen spoke with a low voice. “We should do this quickly.”

The queen waved her hand at the man angrily. “Not now, Frin!”

“Tell me,” the queen turned to Fiona again. “How did you resist the call?”

Fiona did not speak. I knew it wasn’t because of Cari’s block.

The queen seemed furious at first, but then, she forced a smile on her lips. “We shall get it out of you... Bring her to me.”

“Stop!” I shouted as the soldiers beside Fiona started to move toward the portal. “I will tell you how we resisted your call if you let her go.”

The queen raised her hand. There was a little annoying smile on her lips as her gaze darted my way.

“Why should I do anything you say?” She asked. “I have you. I have the time. I can wrangle the truth out of you with ease.”

And Cari can make me say anything she wants, I thought.

Don’t tell her that, Cari’s warning was surprising to say the least.

As the queen continued, I did my best not to show any confusion in my expression.

“You cannot hide the truth,” the queen said, smacking her lips as though she was tasting a delicious meal. “I have time. My inquisitors will persuade you to tell everything.”

There was movement behind her. I thought it was one of the robed men, but as my eyes involuntarily darted toward the divination ball standing before him, I saw a boy.

But it wasn’t just a boy. It took me a while to recognize him.

It was a feeling more than a thought...

I could not ignore the rising emotion in me, and even before my mind could wrap around it, my heart knew who he was.

Feremir.

He had grown. Boys did grow fast when they were his age, but his spurt had to have been the reason I hadn’t recognized him at first. He wore the queen’s sigil on his chest as he stepped out from behind the divination ball and met my eyes.
