“No!” Fiona shouted despite not being able to move. “You do not need him!”
“Do you suggest I settle with one of the Unseelie heirs when I can have both?” The queen’s nostrils flared with anger but her lips curled with a smile. She laughed.
Kieran looked like he was about to explode. Before the soldiers started to drag him, he met my eyes.
The plea I saw in him was confusing at first, but instinct took over quickly.
I reached into his mind, and there it was, a word. A word echoed all over him as though he wished to say it but could not.
Cari was keeping him from speaking out loud.
Cari could not see the connection between us. No mind magickers could. But as soon as I reached into Kieran’s mind and knew the word that would call Qai, I knew I could help him speak. I could not say the word myself, Qai needed to be conjured and I did not have that magic.
But I could help him.
I gathered all my strength to push Cari away from him. I could only give him a moment before Cari resumed control, but as Kieran’s lips finally parted and he mumbled the word I’d heard him utter so many times, Cari staggered.
The door to Qai’s dimension opened between us. The heat and the familiar scent were the first clues. Then, I saw the light coming off the portal as Qai stepped out.
The soldiers holding onto Kieran released him as both took a step away from the hell dimension. Warmth encapsulated us at once for a second before the door disappeared.
Still, we could not move. Cari controlled all of us.
But she could not touch Qai’s mind. He wasn’t fae or human. And he wasn’t a monster from our dimension...
Qai did not waste any time. He attacked the soldier that was closest to him.
“Stop it!” The queen shouted at her soldiers. “Kill the thing!”
As Qai attacked and knocked out the first soldier by throwing him to the wall behind, Cari seemed scared.
She took a few steps back but managed to keep her hold on us. Qai would defeat all the soldiers in the room within seconds while the rest of us just stood there and watched.
“Stop it!” The Queen of Light shouted again. “Or I’ll kill her!”
