“We will not imprison the lords who dared to oppose me,” he said. “If they don’t submit to my rule, we will kill them all, along with their offspring. Those who are loyal to me should be the ones ruling my lands. I will not allow the others to taint the nobility with their treasonous thoughts.”

Lord Lugh was behind Lord Merick now.

He was looking at Lady Queill. The woman nodded.

I knew what this was. She was in Lugh’s mind.

They had come to a decision. I just didn’t know what it was.

Lady Queill turned away from the false king and his son. Her expression was tight.

All I could do was stare at her as her tendrils wrapped around my mind more forcefully than before. I could not even think, let alone act against her now.

“What are you doing, woman?” Lord Merick asked angrily. “Is this some kind of silly protest?”

“Leave us,” Lady Queill told the soldiers. “Xira, you stay.”

“I...” Xira mumbled. As she raised her hands, she did not seem like she was in control of her own body.

I took a step forward to put my hand on Xira’s shoulder. It would be fine. She could do this. She had to do this. I felt the soldiers behind us leave the room. The door closed behind them.

Lord Merick was a water elemental. Perhaps that was why as fear twisted his expression, tiny drops of water started to form around him. There was no water source inside the king’s room. Thus, the only thing he could use was the dampness in the air.

The air was drying as Xira’s fingers flickered with light. Her expression was dull. Fire appeared at her palm.

“You cannot hide this,” Lord Merick said. “My supporters will know.”

Lady Queill took a step to the side to give Xira an opening. Lord Merick turned to his son.

“They will not accept you,” he said to Lord Lugh.

“We will see, father,” Lord Lugh replied as Xira sent a fireball to Lord Merick’s chest. “We will see.”

Xira’s fire hit him and Lord Merick burned. A scream rose from him until it abruptly stopped amidst the flames consuming his body. I had to close my eyes to avoid seeing his pain. I could not enjoy it, not even with the joy I’ve felt from Lady Queill as she was still in my mind.

Lady Queill did not release her hold on us, so as Xira cried, staring at the man she was burning, all I could do was pat her on the back to assure her.

All would be fine.
