The well remained. I held onto it and closed my eyes.

The minds of the monsters opened up to welcome me.

Gethin said something behind me, but I could not hear him.

“You are not monsters,” I told them all, and I knew they were listening.

“What did she say?” Kieran said behind me. “Something is happening.”

I was in them. The monsters roared as the pain of remembering took over their minds. The well shimmered and started to shake before me.

“What are you doing?” Cari asked. She sounded worried. She needn't be.

“Jasmine?” Kieran’s voice was closer now, but I knew not much time had passed since I had gone into Gethin’s mind.

My hand was still on his face.

He was the mirror I needed. Through him, I could see the monster within me. It was shapeless and dark. It was a part of me, and yet, it was a construction. I did not need to believe it.

I was not a monster and neither were they. The connection between me and the rest of the monsters allowed me to reach them. I followed the path and saw their pain. The monsters welcomed me and they responded to my touch.

“Wake up,” I whispered, and I reached into all of them at once to correct what was wrong.

My mind magic worked with the healing magic inside of me. I could reach all of them using the trail. I could see inside them. We were the same. The memories that made them think they were monsters were like drops of poison in their bodies. All I had to do was to push the poison out like I had done for that little girl before Kalyden had erased the healing magic in me.

I opened my eyes, but I could still see all of their minds reaching out, wanting to get rid of the taint that had been inside of them for years.

Someone let out a sigh of surprise as Gethin started changing in front of me. His wings pulled back into his body as his body became smaller. His eyes opened wide and the redness was quickly overcome by his blue irises.

His hair was long and dark. His bones did not stick out of his body in odd places.

He was a young man, probably in his mid-twenties.

And in him, were all the others who had suffered under a lie they had believed for years.

I pushed them into the river of remembering. It hurt to remember, but they did not have a choice.

They had to heal.

I had to heal.

I was no longer the human changeling forced to hide her true self. I had been told I was wrong ever since I was a child. I had been lied to.

We weren’t monsters.

We no longer had to believe that lie.

The connection between us remained as I felt all their pain. It was mine now, something we shared and would destroy together.

I could feel Kieran’s hand on my shoulder, squeezing me, shaking me.

My eyes were open still. The well next to the cherry tree broke with a loud sound.

A painful scream rose from my chest as the pain of all the monsters left them and found a place inside of me.

I could not endure it.

There was no other choice.

I had to go.
