The queen gave me a shining smile when the princess left the room with the soldiers.

“Thank you for sparing my sister, my queen," I said. "I am certain that she will see the truth if given a chance."

"I hope so, too," the queen replied. “But we have other business now. Go and look into the ball with Master Frin. We want to see if the future has changed through our actions tonight. Even if it’s a small chance...”

So that was why the ball of divination was here. The queen wanted to see if the paths had changed now that she had the Princess of the Unseelie. Her father’s reign had ended. Would it change anything for our queen?

I nodded respectfully and went to stand with Master Frin as he touched the divination ball. It took him a few seconds to look into the many paths. Once he did, he looked up.

“I cannot see the prophecy, my queen,” he said. “It is gone.”

The queen’s face lit up with hope. “Feremir, you look too.”

I took Master Frin’s place and put my hands on the ball. It did not take long for the prophecy to come rushing to me. I saw the prophecy I had seen when Aislinn had found me passed out in the middle of the hallway. Nothing had changed in it. The crown broke just the same, and this time, I knew what it meant.

What I saw was the same prophecy.... The one that had caused Master Leo’s death...

The queen was watching me very closely. As I released the vision and met her gaze, I knew there was fear in her...

She feared her future. Aislinn’s words about how the Seelie chose their rulers were fresh in my memory. I knew she had been right. The prophecy foretold the end of our queen’s reign. She feared it and everything she did, she did to ensure it would not come to pass.

“I cannot see anything, my queen,” I said assuredly. “Except...”

“Except what?” She took a nervous step toward me.

“I see the death of your enemies,” I said. “The princess rules with the chosen king. They bow to you. Both realms are yours...”

There was a short pause. I could not be sure if I’d gone too far.

Then, she smiled.

“Justice prevails,” The queen said victoriously.

She had believed the lie.

I returned her smile to the best of my ability.

And I imagined her end.
